Lilly Medicine Foundry in Indiana seeks a Sr. Engineer - Process Safety to support safety reviews, risk assessments, and ongoing compliance during rapid change in a state‑of‑the‑art manufacturing environment.
You will partner with scientists and engineers, own safety program elements, and contribute to continuous improvement while preparing for operational readiness and safe startup. This role is ideal for growth in process safety within API chemistry and equipment.
At Lilly, the work is demanding because patients are waiting. We unite caring with discovery to help make life better for people around the world, knowing that every decision, every detail, and every day matters. Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, our over 50,000 employees around the globe take on complex challenges to discover and deliver life-changing medicines, strengthen how health is understood and managed, and support the communities we serve. This is hard, urgent, selfless work—but it’s work worth doing. If you’re driven by purpose and ready to bring your best to work that truly matters for patients, we invite you to join us.
Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first‑ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact.
The Sr. Engineer - Process Safety supports the implementation of process safety management at the Lilly Medicine Foundry (LMF), with primary focus on preparing the site for operational readiness and sustaining process safety compliance once operations begin. This role concentrates on execution: supporting equipment and chemistry Process Hazard Reviews (PHRs), driving PHR action resolution, supporting Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs), and providing front‑line support to Process Engineers, Scientists, Operators, and Maintenance for day‑to‑day process safety questions. The role owns selected elements of the Foundry Process Safety Management program.
The Foundry operates at a rapid rate of change. Clinical urgency and a continuous tech transfer process mean new chemistry and new equipment configurations arrive frequently. This role sits at that intersection and works in close daily partnership with the scientists and engineers introducing that change.
This is a deliberate development role for a process engineer or early‑career process safety engineer. The successful candidate will build depth in a compliance function while gaining exposure to API manufacturing chemistry and equipment across all Lilly platforms. The volume and variety of chemistry moving through the Foundry offers a breadth of process safety experience. Mentorship is provided by the site PSM lead and Process Engineering, and the role includes access to the Lilly Globally Integrated Process Safety Management Technical Team and the Global HSE community.
