Job summary

Northrop Grumman seeks a Manufacturing Engineer to support the MD&F Cell in Linthicum, MD. The role covers machining, assembly, tooling, documentation, and continuous improvement within a fast-paced team environment.

You will develop processes from CAD models, document routings, and collaborate across functions to ensure producibility and quality, with opportunities for growth into Level 2 or Level 3 roles.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related STEM discipline with 2+ years (Level 2) or 5+ years (Level 3) in manufacturing/process engineering, production, or related area.
  • Hands‑on experience with mechanical fabrication and machining (CNC, EDM, assembly, plating/painting, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and GD&T.
  • Experience with 3D CAD/CAM to support manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency with MS Office; ability to analyze data in Excel.
  • US Citizenship required; ability to obtain Secret clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day manufacturing engineering support for machining, assembly, plating, painting, and finishing operations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with machined and assembled hardware with operators, supervision, maintenance, and quality.
  • Support build plans to meet safety, quality, cost, and schedule objectives.
  • Develop, optimize, and document manufacturing processes, routings, IVPs, and work instructions from CAD models.
  • Identify tooling, fixtures, and gages; design tooling/fixturing to meet tolerances and throughput.
  • Collaborate with design engineering, program management, and supply chain to ensure producibility and clear requirements.
  • Contribute to QC and process improvement initiatives; participate in reviews and knowledge transfer.

Manufacturing Engineer – Mechanical Design & Fabrication (MD&F) Cell

Level 2 / Level 3.

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Sector has an immediate need for a Manufacturing Engineer to support the Mechanical Design & Fabrication (MD&F) Cell as part of the subtractive manufacturing engineering team at our Linthicum, MD facility.

About MD&F

The MD&F cell is a one‑stop shop for machining, mechanical assembly, plating, and finishing. The subtractive manufacturing engineering team supports manufacturing operations of machining (Milling/Turning/Wire EDM), laser welding/cutting, mechanical assembly, plating and finishing to produce prototypes, non‑deliverable models, and production hardware that enable rapid design and producibility verification.

Factory & Floor Support
  • Provide day to day manufacturing engineering support for machining, assembly, plating, painting, and finishing operations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with machined and assembled hardware in collaboration with operators, supervision, maintenance, and quality.
  • Support the execution of build plans to meet safety, quality, cost, and schedule objectives.
Process Development & Documentation
  • Develop, optimize, and document manufacturing processes, routings, in-process verification plans (IVPs), and work instructions from complex drawings and CAD models.
  • Implement process changes and improvements using data‑driven methods.
Tooling, Fixturing, and CAD/CAM Support
  • Identify process required and product specific tools, fixtures, and gages to support machining and assembly operations.
  • Design tooling and fixturing that achieve required tolerances and throughput; document designs and support fabrication and deployment to the floor.
  • Utilize CAD/CAM systems to interpret design intent and, where applicable, support programming for CNC equipment in coordination with Tool Design and NC programming teams.
Quality, Verification, and Continuous Improvement
  • Partner with quality engineering and inspection teams to develop manufacturing processes that integrate clear inspection strategies and verification methods.
  • Analyze process and product performance data (yield, scrap, rework, cycle time) to identify detractors and lead or support corrective and preventive actions.
  • Contribute to technology roadmaps and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance MD&F capabilities and capacity.
Cross Functional Collaboration & Customer Support
  • Collaborate with design engineering, program management, supply chain, and suppliers to ensure designs are producible and manufacturing requirements are clearly defined and met.
  • Provide manufacturing engineering inputs to quotations and proposals, including labor estimates, non‑recurring engineering (NRE), tooling, and capital equipment needs.
  • Support customer and internal reviews as needed, presenting manufacturing plans, process capability, and issue resolution status.
  • Collaborate with senior engineering peers to review plans, resolve complex issues, and grow technical depth, demonstrating openness to coaching and knowledge transfer.

The selected candidate must be able to multitask in a fast paced, high visibility environment; work effectively in a team; and communicate clearly in both written and verbal form.

This requisition may be filled as a Manufacturing Engineer Level 2 or Manufacturing Engineer Level 3 based on the qualifications below.

Basic Qualifications For Manufacturing Engineer Level 3 (T3)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or other related STEM discipline with 5+ years of experience in manufacturing/process engineering, production, or related area – OR –3+ years with Master’s degree in a STEM discipline.
  • Hands‑on experience supporting mechanical fabrication and/or machining (e.g., CNC machining, EDM, assembly, plating/painting, mechanical assembly, or similar).
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and GD&T.
  • Experience with 3D solid modeling in CAD and/or CAM tools to support manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency with MS Office; ability to analyze data using Excel or similar tools.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret level security clearance.
  • US Citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications (Both Levels)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering.
  • Experience in a manufacturing facility where CNC machining, Wire EDM, Mechanical Assembly and plating/painting processes are monitored and improved.
  • Experience with tooling and fixturing design for machining and assembly.
  • Familiarity with laser welding/cutting and/or additive manufacturing and post‑processing.
  • Experience applying DFM/DFA, SPC, and Six Sigma methods; Green Belt or Black Belt certification a plus.
  • Experience using NX CAD/CAM in a Teamcenter environment; exposure to Fanuc, Siemens or similar CNC controls.
  • Prior experience working in a represented manufacturing workforce environment.

Primary Level Salary Range: $79,600.00 - $119,400.00

Secondary Level Salary Range: $98,900.00 - $148,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
