Salary Range: $76,400.00 - $124,023.54. Closing Date: Until Filled.

Job Summary

The City of Gainesville Public Works Department is seeking an Engineer IV to lead development review and engineering projects that support the City’s 2035 vision of an equitable, sustainable, and vibrant community. The incumbent will engage in advanced, independent professional and technical engineering work and will coordinate small engineering staffs within major projects.

Essential Job Functions
  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate major engineering projects.
  • Develop and implement project budgets.
  • Provide guidance, assistance, and interpretation to others.
  • Supervise or coordinate the work of one or more subordinate engineers, technicians, and other support personnel.
  • Manage multiple projects or a major project with unique or controversial issues.
  • Prepare and submit applications, operating reports, and other documentation required by regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinate engineering projects, studies, and activities with internal departments, outside consultants, and contractors.
  • Write specifications, letters, complex reports, and provide technical presentations.
  • Represent the organization to outside groups and regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain effective business relationships with engineering personnel, customers, contractors, suppliers, and agencies.
  • Perform engineering practice involving complex design requirements, materials suitability, and optimization of resources.
  • Conduct economic and statistical analysis for projects or system components.
  • Interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate assignments within the engineering discipline.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including use of personal protective equipment.
Non-Essential Job Functions
  • Supervise major areas of engineering activities.
  • Act in absence of supervisor when required.
  • Enforce the drug policy and supervise employees for the Drug Free Workplace Program as necessary.
  • Respond under emergency conditions.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution with six (6) years of experience, or Master’s degree in engineering with five (5) years of experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification required for certain assignments.
  • Licenses: Valid Florida Class E Driver’s License; Florida Engineering Intern, Engineer‑in‑Training, or Professional Engineer licenses may be required depending on assignment.
  • Knowledge & Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and specialized engineering software; strong written and verbal communication; ability to develop, implement, and interpret policies; advanced problem‑solving and decision‑making; presentation and relationship‑building skills.
  • Physical and Environmental Requirements: Ability to work at heights of over 100 feet, use personal protective equipment, and perform work outdoors in varying climatic conditions.
