This position may be filled at the Engineer III level or one level higher as a Senior Engineer dependent upon the selected candidate's experience.

Position Summary

The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

This incumbent will act as a System Protection and Control Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the development of protection and control standards and templates for relays controlling reclosers and switchgear, support the development of related enterprise and supporting standards and related artifacts, as a member of the PGO (Power Grid Operations) Distribution System Protection and Control peer team within the DPAC (Distribution Protection Automation Control) Enterprise Standards team.

The position will be focused on development and management of standards for operational technology protective relays, controls, and automation devices. This includes system protection template development and application guidance for relays and controls.

Responsibilities
  • Development of standards, application guides, and position statements related to system protection & control and automation of reclosers, switchgear, and other distribution protection and control applications
  • Development of protection & control standard settings, logic, and control templates
  • Support the development of control and automation standards related to protective equipment
  • Act as a SME for input into training and work methods-related documentation and artifacts
  • Hands on testing within a relay lab environment, field commissioning, and factory acceptance testing of new and existing concepts, working with switchgear, relays, and control components
  • Integration of various sensing, control, communications, and protection capabilities into technical standard solution systems for Distribution
  • Close working cooperation with peer team lead for PGO Distribution System Protection Team (including overhead and underground systems) and team members within DPAC ES, peers within Equipment and Construction Standards team, stakeholders within PGO Asset Management, and supporting regional Asset Management/DPAC team members
  • Support the development of an enterprise-wide protection and control settings repository
  • Mentorship and peer leadership with fellow engineers
Required/Basic Qualifications - Engineer III
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • 4 years of minimum required related experience
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Required/Basic Qualifications - Senior Engineer
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Desired Qualifications
  • Incumbent should have the knowledge and ability to design, create standards, and evaluate system protection and control for medium voltage systems (4kV-36kV class)
  • Experience performing system protection and coordination studies
  • Familiarity/experience with advanced protocols, IEC 61850 GOOSE, DNP3.0, including programming and testing advanced protection and automation systems with peer to peer communications
  • Familiarity with NESC (National Electric Safety Code), NEC (National Electric Code, NFPA 70)and other utility industry standards
  • Familiarity with communication control concepts, such as SCADA
  • Programming and testing advanced protection and automation systems with peer-to-peer communications
  • Experience integrating and testing protection and control systems
  • Familiarity/experience with SEL protection automation controls/relays (SEL-651R, SEL-487, SEL-451, SEL 751, SEL RTACs) and associated configuration software
  • Familiarity/experience with relay test equipment (such as Omicron and Doble)and associated software
  • Familiarity with SEL Quickset software suites
  • Experience developing/programming relay and control design templates, including development of system protection relay settings and logic
  • Experience creating standards, standard settings templates, and application guides
  • Experience performing factory acceptance testing, field acceptance testing, and provisioning and commissioning of Distribution equipment and systems
  • Familiarity with related industry groups and their publications, such as ANSI (Associated Electric Systems Interface) andIEEE for power utility protection/automation
  • Transmission Protection and Control Experience
  • Distribution Protection Automation Control Experience
  • Distribution field engineering experience
  • Experience with Integration of power plant, distributed energy resources, or major industrial/commercial/government customer load facilities
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer
Working Conditions
  • Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
