Job summary

Stanley Black & Decker in Towson, MD is seeking an Engineer III, Mechanical to own design processes from concept through testing and production. You will lead cross-functional efforts, perform advanced analyses, and drive root-cause investigations to ensure robust product performance.

Strong CAD/FEA skills (CATIA a plus) and experience with DOE methods are required, with travel to manufacturing sites possible. This role aligns with STANLEY TOOLS and DEWALT Cordless Power Tools brands.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 3–5 years of experience.
  • Experience with product development: Design, DFM, root-cause analysis, test instrumentation and data acquisition and analysis.
  • Quality experience with statistical tools, process capability, DOE's, stack-ups.
  • Coordination of internal and external resources.
  • Possible international travel to visit manufacturing locations.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out the design process to meet quality, performance, schedule and cost objectives in a cross-functional environment.
  • Perform hands-on concept development, prototyping, product testing, data collection and specification definition.
  • Conduct stack-ups and system analysis to ensure consistent lifetime performance of the product.
  • Investigate design issues & test failures; implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with Product Marketing, Reliability, Field Research to define customer requirements and translate into specifications and test systems.
  • Lead design reviews with suppliers and stakeholders; work in a core team to bring a product from start to finish.
  • Support prototype builds and initial production lots to ensure correct assembly and testing.

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 3 to 5 years of experience.
  • Computer literate; MS Word, Power Point, Excel, FEA, 2D/3D CAD (CATIA experience a plus),
  • Demonstrated ability to dissect a problem to find the root cause, design a solution and create a test method to prove out the issue really is fixed.
  • Enjoys getting your hands dirty and being involved in building, testing and du-bugging tools throughout the development cycle
  • Experience with product development: Design, DFM, root cause analysis, test instrumentation and data acquisition and analysis
  • Quality - use of statistical tools, process capability, DOE's, stack-ups
  • Coordination of internal and external resources
  • Accountable for managing the design process and owning the results
  • Enjoy Full/fast-paced design cycles that average 2 years and a dynamic work environment
  • Possible international travel to visit manufacturing locations (post-COVID)
What You'll Do
  • Successfully carry out the design process to achieve all quality, performance, schedule and cost objectives in a cross-functional environment.
  • Perform hands-on concept development, prototyping, product testing, data collection and definition of product specifications.
  • Independently carry out advanced stack-ups and system analysis to ensure product assembly and functionality remain consistent throughout its lifetime.
  • Investigate design issues & test failures, and effectively identify, recommend and implement corrective actions to components.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams (Product Marketing, Reliability, Field Research) to identify and clearly define customer requirements, and translate those requirements into appropriate product specifications and develop test systems to ensure we meet or exceed customer expectations
  • Meet with suppliers, project stakeholders to review designs and alter as needed. Drive the component and assembly design review
  • Work in a core team of 3-4 engineers/designers to develop a product from start to finish
  • Support prototype builds for engineering and manufacturing teams and initial production lots to ensure that the products are assembled and tested in the correct way to ensure long term product quality
  • Implements design and process controls, conducts root-cause analysis, and apply statistical and Lean Six-Sigma techniques to maintain and improve product quality as problems arise thru the product development cycle
  • Adhere to established engineering processes for all engineering requirements to deliver a product that meets our history of guaranteed tough products
