Job summary

U. S. Steel is seeking an Automation Technician for the Big River Steel facility's Coated Products area. The role focuses on troubleshooting, improving, and maintaining Level 1 Automation systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and drives, in a fast-paced plant environment.

The ideal candidate has strong safety awareness, hands-on experience in metals automation, and the ability to collaborate with maintenance, operations, and IT to meet production goals. Bachelor degree or equivalent training required.

Qualifications

  • Highly motivated, self-directed, hands-on, willing to work extra hours or on-call.
  • Minimum 5 years automation experience in metals industry.
  • Experience with server and network device configuration and maintenance.
  • Proficient with Siemens S7 hardware/software (S7 CFC, SCT, etc.).
  • WinCC development and redundant server/client applications.
  • Proficient with IBA Analyzer for troubleshooting.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer or Electrical engineering or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee Level 01 PLCs, HMIs, VF Drives for the Coating Area.
  • Collaborate with maintenance and operations in a fast-paced environment to support safety-focused, productive team.
  • Provide continuous improvement of Automation Control Systems and the assigned process.
  • Perform Failure Analysis for Automation Control Systems.
  • Train others in the Electrical Department on Automation Control Systems.
  • Support plant operations and work with Quality/IT to meet production goals.
  • Manage the design, development, implementation, and procurement of hardware/software for Automation Control improvement projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Responsible for department wide overview of Level 01 PLCs, HMI systems, VF Drives for the Coating Area of Big River Steel.
  2. Work directly with all maintenance and operations personnel in a fast paced environment to help develop a safety focused and productive Coated Products Team and support electrical teammates to help maintain a positive and efficient work environment.
  3. Provide continuous improvement of operation and function of Automation Control Systems and the Assigned Process.
  4. Perform Failure Analysis for Automation Control Systems of assigned process.
  5. Train others in the Electrical Department on the function and maintenance of Automation Control Systems.
  6. Support plant operations and work with the Quality/IT departments to help attain production goals.
  7. Manage the design, development, implementation, and procurement of hardware and/or software for Automation Control improvement Projects and provide support for other disciplines’ projects.

Qualifications:
  1. Demonstrated safety focus and willingness to proactively apply it in a team environment.
  2. Quality and detailed oriented with superior problem solving and communication skills.
  3. Highly Motivated, self-directed, hands‑on approach, and willing to put in extra hours or on‑call support.
  4. Minimum 5 years of automation experience in the metals industry.
  5. Experience with server and network device configuration and maintenance.
  6. Siemens S7 hardware and software using S7 CFC,SCT, SCT and other tools.
  7. WinCC development, runtime, and redundant server and client applications.
  8. Fluent with IBA Analyzer for Troubleshooting and adding signals.
  9. Computer/Electrical Bachelor degree or equivalent training/experience is required.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Environment is typical for a Steel Mill Production Area, with extreme temperatures, high noise levels, and dusty/greasy areas. Physically demanding work will be required in the production environments. Scheduled


Supervisory Responsibility:

This position does not supervise others.
