Job summary

RWE Americas, LLC is seeking a mid-level Engineer II, Electrical BoP Engineer to support balance-of-plant and substation facilities for renewable generation assets in the United States. The role requires strong power-systems knowledge and a practical engineering mindset.

You will perform short-circuit studies and arc-flash analyses, develop electrical models in ETAP, review documentation, support NERC PRC-019/PRC-024, and collaborate with Operations, Asset Management, Compliance and Development

Qualifications

• 3+ years in power systems engineering for utility, generation, industrial, or consulting environments.
• Experience with substation/BOP systems and interpreting single-line/three-line diagrams.
• Working knowledge of protective relaying, device coordination, short circuit analysis, and arc flash studies.
• Familiarity with NERC standards (PRC-019, PRC-024) and related compliance requirements.
• Proficiency with industry modeling software (ETAP; PSSE/PSLF/PSCAD/TSAT is a plus).

This role supports RWE Americas' renewable generation assets by focusing specifically on balance of plant (BOP) equipment and systems. The Electrical BOP team provides engineering expertise for a wide range of BOP components, such as transformers, cables, dynamic and static reactive power devices, substations, relays, breakers, and power plant controllers. By collaborating closely with teams in Operations, Asset Management, Compliance, and Development/Construction, the Electrical BOP team helps ensure that current and future generating assets consistently operate at their best.

We are seeking a mid-level Engineer II, Electrical BoP Engineer with approximately 3 years of experience supporting electrical power systems in utility, generation, industrial, or consulting environments. The ideal candidate will have experience with substation and/or Balance of Plant (BOP) systems, be proficient in interpreting single-line and three-line diagrams, and possess a working knowledge of protective relaying, device coordination, short circuit analysis, and arc flash hazard studies. Responsibilities include supporting engineering studies, reviewing system documentation, providing technical support for NERC standards such as PRC-019 and PRC-024, and conducting power system analyses to support reliability and compliance objectives. The successful candidate will be a versatile engineer with strong technical aptitude, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

Role Responsibilities:

• Perform and review short-circuit studies and arc flash hazard analyses for electrical systems
• Recommend mitigation strategies to reduce incident energy levels
• Prepare technical documentation, including one-line diagrams, protective device coordination, and arc flash labeling
• Develop and maintain accurate electrical system models using ETAP
• Collaborate with project teams and clients to gather system data and validate inputs.
• Provide technical support for NERC standards (i.e., PRC-019, PRC-024, etc.) and, where possible, conduct studies to meet NERC compliance
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to streamline processes, procedures, and methodologies associated with power system studies
• Ensure compliance with all relevant codes and standards, including:
• NFPA 70E – Electrical Safety in the Workplace
• IEEE 1584 – Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations
• OSHA 29 CFR 1910 – Electrical Safety Regulations
• NEC (NFPA 70) – National Electrical Code

Job Requirements and Experiences:

• Master or Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Engineering, or Physics
• Engineer in Training (EIT) preferred, and working towards a Professional Engineer (PE) certificate
• A minimum of 3 years in power systems engineering with experience working on short-circuit and arc flash studies
• A minimum of 3 years of professional experience with operating and analyzing high voltage power systems equipment
• A minimum of 3 years of professional experience applicable to electric power generation, generation management, and automatic generation control.
• Detailed knowledge of power generation and distribution equipment, transformers, switchgear, transmission feeders, substations, and renewable energy
• Knowledge of Codes and Standards: NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584, NEC, NESC, OSHA regulations.
• Strong understanding of protective device coordination and relay settings
• Familiarity with the North American Electrical Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards
• Familiarity with industry modeling software such as PSSE, PSLF, PSCAD, TSAT, and ETAP (a plus)
• Ability and willingness to travel to and from job sites as assigned
• Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to manage customer relationships
• Demonstrated desire to learn about the Company and the renewables space
• Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Teams
• Strong leadership and communication, and ability to meet deadlines
• Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple tasks and deliverables
• Ability to multi-task while working independently and as part of a team
• Motivated self-starter, goal-oriented, and strong problem-solving abilities
• Proven experience utilizing AI and other automation skills to optimize and organize work practices

Work Environment:

This position is an office-based role with some travel and visits to other RWE America’s offices and field locations. The employee must be able to sit, walk, or stand for long durations of time.

Pay range:

The annual base salary range for this position in California and Illinois is $110,000 - $120,000. The listed salary range represents our good faith estimate for this position and represents the range for new hire salaries across all U.S locations.
