Vehicle Engineer II –Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE The Vehicle Engineer II is an experienced contributor who independently leads the design, development, testing, and validation of vehicle subsystems and systems in Wheelchair Access Vehicles (WAVs). This engineer demonstrates strong technical depth and takes full ownership of assigned subsystems from concept through production launch. This role operates with minimal supervision and is expected to proactively identify risks, influence technical decisions, and deliver robust engineering solutions.

Vehicle Engineer II –Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE The Vehicle Engineer II is an experienced contributor who independently leads the design, development, testing, and validation of vehicle subsystems and systems in Wheelchair Access Vehicles (WAVs). This engineer demonstrates strong technical depth and takes full ownership of assigned subsystems from concept through production launch. This role operates with minimal supervision and is expected to proactively identify risks, influence technical decisions, and deliver robust engineering solutions.

Essential Functions
Design and develop new vehicle conversions in CAD (e.g. Inventer, NX, Solidworks).
Design mechanisms, suspensions, structures and closures (doors and liftgates).
Plan for design, procurement, assembly, and validation requirements aligned with project timing and APQP.
Ensure vehicle designs and systems conform to quality and cost targets.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Build and design prototype vehicles.
Participate in design reviews.
Independently lead assigned systems or major components through the complete product development lifecycle.
Drive architectural changes to resolve integration challenges.
Lead packaging, layout, and interface definition activities for subsystems.
Author DFMEAs and support PFMEA activities through cross-functional collaboration.
Lead complex validation efforts and ensure correlation between simulation, testing, and field performance.
Perform and support engineering simulations, including FEA where appropriate.
Author engineering documentation, requirements, lessons learned, and best practices.
Produce new requirements based on lessons learned and manage requirements through Requirements Verification Traceability Matrix (RVTM).
Track system cost, timing, and technical risks while leading mitigation activities.
Release components and systems using Teamcenter and Epicor.
Leadership Functions
Mentor engineers, lead strategic activities, and proactively provide recommendations for designs with peers.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Understanding of Vehicle Engineering and Systems Integration.
Proficiency in structural design and manufacturing processes.
Knowledge of materials and vehicle systems.
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Proficient CAD modeling.
Proficient in part tolerancing and GD&T.
Understanding and application of Systems Engineering V-Model.
Strong understanding of vehicle architecture and subsystem integration.
Ability to evaluate new materials and support manufacturability decisions.
Ability to interpret and apply compliance requirements.
Ability to communicate simulation needs and perform analysis where possible.
Proficient in Teamcenter, Epicor, EBOM and MBOM structures.
Applies DMAIC and structured root-cause analysis methods consistently.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology required.
Desired Qualifications
Advanced degree encouraged.
Participation in multiple product development cycles.
Previous Assembly Plant Launch Experience Preferred.
Experience with Mechanism, Steel and Aluminum part design and manufacturing.
GD&T certification.
APQP knowledge and application.
Six Sigma knowledge encouraged.
Engaged in lifelong learning and contemporary engineering development.

  • Critically evaluate AI-generated recommendations and validate results using engineering expertise and data-driven decision making.
  • Identify opportunities to automate engineering workflows and improve productivity through AI-enabled tools.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging AI technologies and their application to vehicle development, validation, and product engineering.

Independently processes technical challenges and proposes solutions.
Clearly communicates technical issues, risks, data, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Assists with mentoring junior engineers and reviewing work products.
