Job summary

RK&K is seeking an Engineer to join our Water Resources team in Raleigh or Charlotte, NC. You will support multiple DOT and municipal projects, working with a multidisciplinary group of professionals across the firm.

You will perform hydrology and hydraulics analyses, develop drainage reports, and assist with civil plans using MicroStation ORD. The role offers growth, a competitive benefits package, and opportunities to advance within RK&K's established practice.

Qualifications

  • Minimum bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, or Biological Systems Engineering.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Coursework in Fluid Mechanics, Water Resources Engineering, or Urban Hydraulics and Hydrology.
  • 0–3 years of experience in water resources engineering.
  • Knowledge of hydrologic and hydraulic methodologies and analysis tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a wide range of water resource projects on schedule and budget.
  • Provide excellent client service with focus on quality and timeliness.
  • Work with project team, clients, and stakeholders to complete design tasks.
  • Assist with office and site visits for assigned projects.
  • Support documentation and preliminary modeling and due diligence.
  • Model complex riverine systems and watersheds; propose improvements.
  • Prepare drainage reports and hydraulic memoranda.
  • Assist with civil plans development using MicroStation ORD.
  • Seek opportunities to lead tasks as experience grows.

Job description

RK&K is currently hiring an Engineer to join our growing Water Resources team in Raleigh or Charlotte, NC. This is an excellent opportunity for you to take the next step in your career. On our Water Resources team, you will support multiple NCDOT and Municipal projects, working alongside a multidisciplinary team of experienced professionals throughout our entire company.

Types of water resources projects include, but are not limited to:
  • Storm drainage design and analysis
  • Hydrology & hydraulics analysis for bridges and culverts
  • Modeling bridges and culverts for floodplain impacts using HEC-RAS (1D and 2D) and SRH-2D
  • Hydraulics routing using programs such as PCSWMM
  • Erosion and sediment control
  • Preparing drainage plans as well as bridge and culvert survey reports
  • Preparing permit impact drawings
  • Stormwater control measure facility design and hydraulic routing
Essential Function
  • Proactively deliver a wide range of water resource projects in accordance with the scope, schedule, and budget set by the Project Manager
  • Provide excellent client services with a focus on quality and timeliness
  • Report to a Project Manager; meet and work directly with other design team members, project engineers, design technicians, drafters, surveyors, contractors, inspectors, public agency officials, and clients
  • Provide office and site visit support for assigned and prospective projects
  • Assist with the development of necessary documentation and preliminary modeling, analysis, and due diligence in support of project pursuits
  • Perform modeling of complex riverine systems and existing watersheds / storm drain networks, and develop recommended improvement alternatives
  • Prepare clear and concise drainage reports and hydraulic memoranda documenting analysis approach, findings, and recommendations
  • Assist with civil engineering plans development using MicroStation ORD.
  • Proactively grow in experience to lead tasks.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, or Biological Systems Engineering
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, Teams)
  • Coursework in Fluid Mechanics, Water Resources Engineering, and/or Urban Hydraulics and Hydrology
  • Zero (0) - Three (3) years of experience in water resources engineering
  • Knowledge of commonly-used hydrologic and hydraulic computational methodologies and analysis tools/trends
  • Strong organizational, written and verbal communication skills required
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work both collaboratively/in a team environment and independently
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Project experience related to hydraulic analysis of culvert/bridge stream crossings
  • Experience performing field work for in support of various water resources projects
  • Experience with Microstation ORD
  • Floodplain analysis utilizing HEC-RAS (1D) software
  • Engineer in Training (EIT)
