Job summary

Duke Energy Corporation in the United States is seeking an SOE Engineer to support the Progress Energy Control Center and reliability coordinator functions. The role involves developing operating studies and reliability assessments to meet NERC standards and interconnection agreements.

You will perform planning studies, develop real-time operation solutions, collaborate with transmission planning teams, and assist in training and documentation to ensure compliance and reliable power delivery.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from ABET accredited program.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred)
  • NERC Certified Operator (preferred)
  • Passage of the Engineering Fundamentals Exam (preferred)
  • Experience in the utility industry and System Operations/Transmission Planning (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Perform operational planning studies and reliability assessments with Systems Operations and Transmission Planning teams.
  • Develop real-time operations solutions on the transmission system and document operational procedures.
  • Support resolution of operating issues with generation entities, neighboring systems, and load-serving entities.
  • Participate in pre/post-operating assessment studies of system performance.
  • Provide emergency support during storms and operating emergencies.
  • Support compliance programs for FERC and NERC requirements and related documentation.
  • Support Energy Management System modeling accuracy and maintenance.
  • Assist training activities for Systems Operations staff.
  • Participate in industry working groups related to Reliability and Interconnection Agreements

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from ABET accredited program
Master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S.

The Systems Operations Engineering (SOE) Engineer primarily supports the Duke Energy Progress Energy Control Center functions. This position also supports the Reliability Coordinator function as defined by the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC). This position develops various daily, weekly, and seasonal operating studies/reliability assessments for operations. This includes work necessary to comply with all applicable Reliability Standards for Bulk Electric Systems and Operating/Interconnection Agreements.

Responsibilities
  • Perform operational planning studies and reliability assessments--working with others in Systems Operations; Transmission System Planning; and counterparts with neighboring companies--participating in reliability and interconnection agreements
  • Develop real-time operations solutions on the transmission system, including development of operational procedures to change transmission system configuration or re-dispatch of generation to manage loading concerns
  • Support the resolution of operating issues with all stakeholders including generation entities, neighboring systems, and various load serving entities connected to the transmission system
  • Participate in pre/post-operating assessment studies of system performance
  • Provide emergency support during storms and operating emergencies
  • Support special studies as required for corporate planning purposes or in support of compliance administration programs for FERC and North American Electric Reliability Organization (NERC) requirements
  • Provide support of the Energy Management System by ensuring accuracy of the transmission network modeling and equipment ratings
  • Support ongoing Duke Energy and VACAR South compliance with FERC and NERC requirements including development and review of appropriate documentation
  • Support training activities for others in Systems Operations
  • Participate in various industry Electric Reliability Organization or Regional Entity working groups and/or groups associated with Reliability and Interconnection Agreements
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • NERC Certified Operator
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management
  • Experience in the utility industry
  • System Operations or Transmission Planning experience
Working Conditions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility.
