PNM is seeking a Distribution System Protection Engineer to perform complex engineering work ensuring safe, reliable, and economical protection systems. You will conduct essential studies, develop protective relay settings, and coordinate with neighboring entities while complying with IEEE/NESC/FERC/NERC standards.
Role involves field and office collaboration, mentoring staff, and communicating technical concepts to diverse audiences within the utility.
PNM is looking for a Distribution System Protection Engineer that will perform complex engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient, and economic manner.
Under general supervision, the system protection engineer is responsible for the following:
Perform short circuit, overcurrent, and distance coordination studies using ASPEN Oneliner and/or Synergi
Calculate and develop protective relay settings for new projects and/ or modify existing protective relay settings as required to maintain system reliability and coordinate settings with neighboring entities as needed
Analyze system disturbances and recommend mitigation plans
Review relaying one line, three line, AC/ DC schematics, wiring diagrams and other protection design deliverables for accuracy
Support regulatory filings or other PNM plans and programs
Ensure compliance with utility standards, safety regulations, and state/federal rules (IEEE, NESC, FERC/NERC) as applicable
Provide technical support and direction to field personnel and contractors, and training to less experienced staff, as needed
Communicate engineering ideas, recommendations and evaluations to diverse internal and external audiences
Apply engineering expertise to improve or develop new standards and new technology solutions
Perform all work in a safe and timely manner

Represents the company¿s interests in engineering matters that may be varied and complex in nature
Interacts with and provides broad knowledge technical support to other associates
Applies engineering expertise to improve or develop new standards
Provides technical direction and/or activity supervision to contractors and company personnel on a regular, on-going basis
Broad knowledge and proven ability to apply engineering principles, practices and regulations to, and perform economic and decision analysis studies of issues in areas including, but not limited to, generation, transmission, distribution, system planning, financial and regulatory issues, asset utilization, and environmental controls and regulations
Ability to read, interpret and apply national, state and local codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, ACI, AISC, ASME, NACE, etc.)
Ability to translate electrical theory and physics to utility application for improving system reliability
Ability to make informed repair decisions following company protocols

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor¿s Degree in Engineering from a college/university accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET), plus four or more years of engineering experience or three or more with a Fundamentals of Engineering certificate or three or more with a Master¿s Degree in Engineering.
Fundamentals of Engineering certificate is preferred.
Must possess current, legally valid driver¿s license and meet the Company¿s driving record requirements.
