  • No experience for Engineer I, 5+ years for Engineer II, 10+ years for Engineer III.

SUMMARY

The Engineer provides safe and cost‑effective engineering for electric system construction and maintenance. Responsibilities include maintaining knowledge of UEC substations, transmission, and distribution systems, assisting in preparing technical engineering studies, reports, and construction work plans.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Creates construction, system improvement, or maintenance work order packages for assigned routine projects.
  • Ensures electrical protection by developing technical studies such as coordination, sectionalizing, voltage, and fault studies.
  • Plans long‑term and short‑term construction work plans within required approvals and UEC policies.
  • Prepares and presents design drawings and project details for approval.
  • Recommends designs for new electric plant or improvements to existing plant, substations, transmission, or distribution lines.
  • Prepares engineering report computations, cost estimates, specifications, or other details as requested.
  • Performs outage on‑call duties on rotation; maintains knowledge of UEC's SCADA and mapping systems.
  • Directs project management for routine large construction/maintenance projects with minimal direction; works with consultants and contractors, providing instructions and direction.
  • Develops company procedures and work processes; contributes to strategic or department work plan initiatives; attends RUS engineering and finance requirements.
  • Prepares routine technical specifications; identifies material needs, issues procurement instructions for projects; reviews new materials/equipment specifications.
  • Performs a variety of engineering tasks in the initial planning and design phase of projects.
  • Applies technical principles, theories, and concepts; stays informed on new equipment, practices, procedures, and engineering standards.
  • Complies with UEC policies and procedures.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues and fosters cooperation in the workplace.
  • Conducts themselves in a manner that reflects well on UEC and contributes to harmonious relations with members and the general public.
  • Respectfully takes direction from Manager or Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to perform essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY

Engineer I: no supervisory responsibilities.

Engineer II & Engineer III: may have supervisory responsibilities.

Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering or related discipline OR equivalent education/experience.
  • Experience:
Experience Level
  • Engineer I: No experience required.
  • Engineer II: 5+ years progressive experience in electric utility or related engineering.
  • Engineer III: 10+ years of experience including 3 years with complex capital project implementation.
Preferred Qualifications/Skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills with experience in graphic design, technical writing, electric system design software, GIS, analytics, statistics, and web-based training.
  • Advanced math skills including advanced calculus, algebra, and statistics.
  • Valid Driver’s License for occasional travel.
Engineer I Preferred Qualifications
  • An Engineer In‑Training certificate is preferred.
Engineer II Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience managing routine projects on budget and on schedule.
  • Proficient in database, spreadsheet, report writing, project management, graphics, word processing, presentation creation/editing, and email communication.
  • Preferred qualifications outlined under Engineer I.
Engineer III Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate project milestones.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex projects on budget and on schedule.
  • Excellent presentation, persuasion, and negotiation skills for interactions with members, customers, or coworkers; remains calm and courteous under pressure.
  • Proactive action to accomplish objectives and identify issues/opportunities.
  • Professional Engineer License preferred.
  • Preferred qualifications outlined under Engineer I & II.
