Job summary

Nicor Gas is seeking an Engineer, Integrity Verification in Naperville, IL to manage the Dig Program and support the lead engineer with research and evaluation of gas asset records to PHMSA, state, and company standards.

The role requires coordinating with Transmission Integrity, Project Management, Construction, GIS & Asset Data Services, and documenting findings. You will assist in establishing MAOP, reviewing designs, and providing on-site technical support.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Engineering (Civil, Industrial, or Mechanical preferred).
  • 1-2 years of progressive Engineering experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • 2-3 years of progressive engineering experience.
  • 5 years of progressive engineering experience in gas standard and materials, project engineering or construction management.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Dig Program to meet codes and standards.
  • Provide on-site technical support during construction.
  • Assist with designing and reviewing third-party designs and internal projects.
  • Track project schedules and budgets from concept to completion.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY :

The Engineer, Integrity Verification, is accountable for managing the Nicor Gas Dig Program. This position will assist the lead engineer with the Integrity Verification Program through detailed research and prudent evaluation of existing pipeline and related asset records and physical attributes based on codes, standards, and practices established by PHMSA, the Company, and Industry. As the assets are assessed, the Engineer orchestrates and directs subsequent actions, as necessary, including managing additional work to establish maximum allowable operating pressures. The role requires significant coordination with Transmission Integrity, Project Management, Construction, Land, GIS & Asset Data Services as well as precise documentation.

The Dig Program will process all digs performed:

  • manage all projects to meet all codes and standards

    • ensure the SOW for each dig is followed

    • review and provide feedback on designs by third-party and direct internally designed projects

    • technical support to construction field activities including on-site support

    • utilize digs (excavations) to cover multiple requests (if opportunistic)

    • obtain Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) data

    • satisfy TIMP assessment requirements

    • satisfy Operations needs (corrosion, asset protection, etc.)

Functional Expertise:
  • Develop technical procedures, projects, and engineering designs, by interacting with staff and performing quality reviews to ensure designs meet PHMSA, State, and Company standards

  • Follow established Asset Development Processes (ADP) to ensure meaningful structure exists to meet departmental and company objectives

  • Work to establish and organize detailed historical records pertaining to gas system integrity

  • Track projects from concept through completion with responsibility for schedule and budget variances

Business Acumen:
  • Develop permanent records and evaluation processes to an established standard

  • Design engineering solutions that provide the most efficient and cost-effective long-term solutions for ongoing issues with the gas distribution system

  • Ensure that applicable requirements and standards for reporting are followed

  • Assure compliance with Company policies & procedures

  • Identify and properly manage project risk

Engagement:
  • Collaborate with Construction Management, PMO, GIS and Asset Data Services, System Integrity and System Planning leaders to produce effective solutions and designs

  • Track project metrics to ensure project completions are on time.

  • Identify and track design scope changes (e.g. adequately documented, impact analysis, approved, etc.)

  • Coordinate department and project meetings

Driving Results:
  • Provide scheduling and budgeting support to ensure that budgeted projects are constructed within budget year

  • Develop project execution plans

  • Support departmental O&M goals

  • Participate in scorecard process for contractors

  • On time delivery for project designs

  • 2 years or more of familiarity and experience with Gas Safety regulations or utility pipeline construction practices

Or equivalent education and experience

Skills:
  • Strong engineering and construction knowledge with natural gas distribution systems, natural gas transmission systems, gas engineering principles and theories, and DOT pipeline safety regulations
  • Knowledge of PHMSA Part 192, ASME B31.8, B31.8S and other codes related to pipeline integrity
  • Strong understanding of the integrity management assessment process
  • MS Office Suite – intermediate proficiency
  • Highly skilled working across functional organization for group coordination
  • Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization
  • Ability to influence and persuade in decision making.
Certifications/Licenses:
  • Preferred: Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) or Professional Engineering License (PE)
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
