Job summary

Montana-Dakota Utilities is seeking engineers at multiple levels to design and oversee electric and natural gas distribution projects. Engineers I–III contribute to design, analysis and project management while prioritizing safety and compliance.

Engineer II and III require increasing experience and responsibility, with emphasis on system modeling and coordination with field operations. Travel within the service area is expected.

Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Civil or Electrical).
  • Engineer II requires a bachelor's degree and two years related work experience.
  • Engineer III requires a bachelor's degree and five years of progressively responsible experience in energy utility operations.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains high pressure and distribution system models and analyzes performance data to support new loads.
  • Manages placement of recording devices and reviews system data to monitor capacity and ensure compliance with codes and policies.
  • Prepares feasibility studies and engineering design of distribution extensions with proper installation of equipment.
  • Identifies and plans required system reinforcement to maintain service during peak demand periods.
  • Provides engineering designs, specifications, support service, cost estimates and project management for electric/natural gas projects.

Education

Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Civil or Electrical)
EI (Engineering Intern) or EIT (Engineering in Training) Certificate

Job description

Responsible for placing safety as #1 priority in day-to-day work routine for self and others. Responsible for the preparation and project coordination of engineering designs, economic justification and installation of electric/gas distribution systems and specifications for various projects. Effectively works and interacts with regional and field operations. Performs studies and related activities. Provides support to engineering staff as needed.

Engineer I: Applies basic engineering techniques for entry-level assignments with review and guidance from a higher level.

Engineer II: Applies standard engineering methods and techniques to solve problems; moderate guidance and direction is provided and work is normally reviewed from a high level.

Engineer III: Applies a broad range of engineering skills and techniques, leads projects, and provides direction to lower level engineers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Engineer I: ($73,460 - $91,830)

  • Must possess a bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Civil or Electrical).

Engineer II: ($84,460 - $105,570)

  • Must possess a bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Civil or Electrical); and,
  • Two years related work experience.

Engineer III: ($97,110 - $121,390)

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Civil or Electrical); and
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience and understanding in the energy industry including utility electric and gas operations, maintenance, design, and project management.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prior engineering experience in electric/natural gas utility.
  • Training and proficiency in business application software such as Engineering Analysis programs, CAD, GIS, surveying principles, and J.D. Edwards.
  • An EI (Engineering Intern) or an EIT (Engineering in Training) Certificate.

In addition to the above, an Engineer III has:

  • Professional Engineering (P.E.) designation.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Must take all measures necessary to protect networks, devices, programs and data from cyber-attack, damage or unauthorized access.
  • Required to maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Moderate (25%) travel within service territory is required.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United State, no sponsorships considered.
  • Subject to pre-employment drug screen and background check.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develops and maintains high pressure and distribution system models by gathering and analyzing system performance data, customer loads and system loads with computer-based flow modeling software and recommends alternative solutions to support the addition of new loads.
  • Manages placement of recording devices and review of system data to effectively monitor system capacity and ensure compliance with State and Federal codes and company policy.
  • Prepares feasibility studies and engineering design of distribution extensions, while assuring proper installation of equipment.
  • Identifies and plans required system reinforcement to ensure continued electric/natural gas service to all customers during peak demand period.
  • Provides engineering designs, specifications, support service, cost estimates and project management for electric/natural gas construction projects and other projects of technical nature.
