We're the sole designer, builder and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. Our diverse and innovative team of professionals ranges from skilled trades to project managers, engineers and software developers to solution architects, technical subject matter experts, and system users. We collaborate together at the forefront of technology, manufacturing, and integration of the most powerful and survivable naval ships in the world.

The Role

Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Designs electrical equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes.

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer 5 to serve as the technical project lead for the next-generation attack submarine electric plant. Reporting to the E11 Manager of the Future Propulsion Electrical team, the incumbent will operate autonomously, coordinating across multiple disciplines and organizations to drive design of the next generation electric plant. The role acts as the primary technical liaison with the customer and provides insight on budget, schedule, training, and material considerations to management throughout the design phase. Success is measured by customer acceptance of the electric plant design and its integrated power generation and delivery interfaces. The Electrical Engineer 5 will also mentor and develop internal talent to support future naval propulsion plant designs.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience; Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have
  • 10+years of experience in naval electric plant design, preferably naval nuclear propulsion platforms.
  • Deep familiarity with the standard, analyses, and specifications governing shipboard electric plant design (e.g., NAVSEA, MIL-STD, IEEE).
  • Proven expertise in medium-voltage hardware, system modeling, and propulsion/electric plant dynamics.
  • Experience leading technical projects from concept through commissioning, including interface management.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical insight on budget, schedule, training, and material requirements.
  • Strong background in testing methods and validation of complex shipboard power systems.
  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering or a related field, with a record of mentoring junior engineers. Extensive work experience can be substituted for an advanced degree.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills, serving as the primary technical interface with customers.
