Under close supervision of a professional engineer, architect, surveyor, supervising inspector or supervising engineering technician, in a learning capacity, performs sub-professional office and field engineering or architectural work.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Employment in this class is restricted to students enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university curriculum leading to a bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental, or sanitary engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, or construction management. It provides an opportunity for students to become familiar with the practical application of engineering or architectural theory during the college course of study and for a limited duration following the completion of the semester or quarter. No full-time permanent appointments will be made from this class.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs a wide variety of increasingly difficult sub-professional engineering or architectural work in connection with public works programs, projects and/or facilities.
  • Acts as member of a survey party crew on preliminary design and construction of public works facilities and, as the incumbent progresses, may do instrument work.
  • Prepares engineering or architectural plans and specifications for simple projects or portions of more complex projects.
  • Performs engineering calculations and prepares less complicated architectural designs.
  • Conducts routine inspections of construction work and performs office work associated with management of construction projects.
  • Gathers and compiles field data and makes engineering computations.
  • Performs drafting work manually and/or using computerized programs.
  • Prepares reports and correspondence.
  • Conducts facility tours.
  • Delivers materials to other engineering locations and makes site visits.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge of:

  • Principles of the engineering or architecture applicable to the work assignment
  • Basic drafting procedures and practices applicable to the work assignment
  • Basic mathematical computations

Ability to:

  • Communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective, cooperative working relationships.
  • Follow administrative and technical procedures and instructions.
  • Use computer and related peripheral equipment.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Apply course work in the specific career field to assigned duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either:1. Current full-time enrollment in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s degree in civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental, or sanitary engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, or construction management.

Or:2. Current full-time enrollment in a graduate degree program at an accredited college or university leading to a degree in civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental, or sanitary engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, or construction management.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

Physical Requirements:

  • Performing keyboard operations.
  • Sitting for long periods of time.
  • Walking on uneven terrain project sites.

Compensation: $22.90-29.85/hr. Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education. Benefit packages for this role will start on the 31st day of employment and include medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as HSA, FSA, and DCFSA account options, and 401k retirement account access. Employees in this role are also entitled to paid sick leave and/or other paid time off as provided by applicable law.
