Job Summary
We are seeking an entry-level Engineer 1 to support the design, planning, and construction of power-related systems. This role is ideal for recent engineering graduates or early-career engineers looking to build a strong technical foundation in utility or industrial engineering environments.
The Engineer 1 will apply engineering processes, design criteria, and software tools to develop design solutions, support cost estimates, and prepare construction specifications. This position also involves coordination with internal departments and construction/maintenance teams while learning company design standards and work processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply engineering techniques, design criteria, and software applications in the design and construction of power-related systems.
- Support development of design options, cost estimates, and construction specifications.
- Assist with guidance, oversight, and QA reviews for contractors preparing design solutions and engineering packages.
- Promote a strong safety culture by prioritizing safety in all work activities.
- Learn and understand processes related to planning, design, operation, construction, and maintenance.
- Collaborate with internal departments involved in engineering, construction, and maintenance activities.
- Utilize engineering software tools and understand applicable industry standards and Southern Company design criteria.
- Support construction and maintenance teams with engineering assistance and day-to-day operations.
- Estimate materials, prepare design documentation, and transmit construction packages.
Required Skills & Expertise
- Introductory engineering knowledge and basic problem-solving skills.
- Ability to follow procedures and make limited independent decisions under supervision.
- Familiarity with discipline-specific engineering software tools.
- Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to learn.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with plant staff, engineering teams, and vendors.
- Intermediate to advanced ability to read and interpret engineering plans.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong communication skills across all organizational levels.
Education & Experience
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (ABET accredited).
Preferred:
- Civil, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering discipline.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
- Internship or co-op experience in an engineering field.
- Basic skills in CAD/GIS.
- Exposure to hydraulic analysis or project management.
