Job description

GAI Consultants has a career‑building opportunity for a Civil Engineer 1 within our Power Business Unit’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Business Sector. GAI is an established and growing multi‑discipline engineering firm with tremendous growth opportunities in the Pittsburgh, PA region. The successful candidate will enjoy working in a challenging, fast‑paced, and team‑oriented environment that will utilize their related experience to develop professionally and grow in today's global environment. This position can be based out of any of GAI’s office locations. GAI’s Power Business Unit focuses on developing and supporting Energy, Institutional, Industrial, and Manufacturing clients.

Job Duties
  • Plans, designs, and facilitates civil engineer project design tasks such as site grading and drainage design; access road design; erosion and sediment pollution control design; stormwater management design; report preparation; and permitting.
  • Performs technical and feasibility studies.
  • Collaborates with other professionals and discusses requirements with team members.
  • Uses computer programs to develop detailed designs.
  • Ensures that work products meet client, environmental, and safety requirements.
  • Performs work with minimal guidance and supervision.
  • Handles complex issues and refers only the most complex issues to more experienced staff.
  • Strong working knowledge of civil engineering design tasks and a positive attitude.
  • Possesses strong knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and analysis modules.
  • Performs moderate to complex civil design tasks while delegating more routine tasks to staff with less experience.
  • Mentor, guide and check the work of less experienced staff.
  • Strong team collaboration, oral and written communication, design expertise, and problem‑solving skills are required.
  • Adhere to the safety and quality procedures of GAI and our clients.
  • Travel to other offices/meet with clients/attend project‑specific meetings (occasional local/regional travel that is expected to be 5%-10% of the time).

Technical Responsibilities
  • Occasionally designs portions of a project, system, component, or process.
  • Prepares plans, specifications, and other project documents.
  • Designs and conducts analyses and interprets test data.
Project and Task Management
  • Occasionally assigns tasks to other technical and non‑technical staff.
  • Occasionally plans and coordinates detailed aspects of the engineering work.
  • Prepares scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments.
  • Assists with proposals to provide professional services or obtain funding for engineering projects or projects.
Management Responsibility
  • Receives general direction on key objectives. Receives guidance on unconventional/complex problems, direction on modified techniques, and new approaches on assignments with conflicting criteria.
  • Mentors junior staff by providing guidance, explaining professional responsibilities, and reviewing work products.
  • Attends project meetings and presents specific aspects of engineering assignments.
Communication Skills
  • Communicates effectively to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
