Job summary

The North Shore Water Reclamation District is seeking a design engineer to work on a wide variety of projects, including project development, contract document preparation, and bidding. A BS in Engineering is required. The District offers comprehensive benefits and is based in Gurnee, IL.

The successful candidate will design and manage in-house projects, interface with consultants, and contribute to the District’s capital planning efforts. Starting pay is $86,213/year with strong benefits.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Environmental or Process Engineering.
  • 3 years of engineering experience or a master’s degree in a related field.
  • Professional Engineer license in Illinois or ability to obtain within one year.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and conduct engineering studies, data analysis and reporting for improvements.
  • Direct the preparation of designs, layouts and specifications for water reclamation facilities.
  • Coordinate with operations, electrical, mechanical and process teams to define project scope.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: Engineer
Department: Engineering Services

Job Purpose Statement: Performs engineering work in the design, construction, maintenance and operation of water reclamation facilities and pumping stations including collection and analysis of data and information for project scope development, preparation of contract documents, and bidding. Work with Project Manager during construction phase of projects, and interface with Consultants as District point of contact on major design projects. Assist in the District’s capital planning process.

Reporting Structure: Supervisor of Design and Construction.

Job Functions
  1. Supervises, coordinates and conducts engineering studies, tests and analyses; oversees the collection, calculation and compiling of data; conducts research regarding alternative techniques or processes, reviews reports and presents recommendations regarding facility or process improvements; prepares reports pertaining to output, progress and/or operations.
  2. Directs and participates in the preparation of engineering designs, layouts and specifications for water reclamation facilities and related facilities; assists in the preparation of contract documents; reviews contract submittals for compliance with quality and safety requirements.
  3. Interact with operations, mechanical, electrical and process automation personnel to determine and define scope and requirements of project.
  4. Locate and contact vendors to establish sources of supply to meet project requirements, prepare purchase requisitions, bid documents, and procurement documents.
  5. Assist Project Manager in administration of projects under construction to ensure work conforms to design intent and requirements of contract documents.
  6. Prepares internal and external correspondence regarding engineering projects and related inquiries; confers with other sections, technical consultants and contractors regarding project requirements and assists in the resolution of associated problems.
  7. Work with consultants as the District’s representative on major design projects by coordinating project meetings, providing data, responding to information requests, assisting in review of preliminary design memos, contract documents, and reviewing and approving consultant pay requests.
  8. Assist in Capital Improvement Project scope development, and prepare detailed engineering cost estimates for capital planning purposes.
  9. Assist Supervisor of CMOM & Permitting when collection system projects, sewer/force main emergencies and permitting deadlines are urgent.

Job Qualification Requirements

Knowledge: B.S. degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Environmental or Process Engineering.

Experience: 3 years of experience in application of engineering principles is desired or a master’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Environmental or Process Engineering in lieu of experience.

Machines, Tools, Equipment (Office and Industrial), Software: Proficiency in use of engineering software tools (AutoCAD, GIS ArcView).

Licenses/Certifications: Professional Engineer registration in the State of Illinois or ability to obtain within one year of being eligible.

Other: Valid driver’s license.
