Job summary

Lee County’s Department of Transportation seeks a Department of Transportation Engineer to lead a team of engineers and technicians, oversee high-impact programs and ensure safe, efficient bridges, stormwater systems, and road networks.

You will direct maintenance initiatives, support capital projects, and collaborate with partners to strengthen county operations, delivering results that directly benefit the community.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• 2 years of engineering or closely related experience.

Responsibilities

• Oversee engineering programs, including bridge inspections and major maintenance.
• Lead and develop engineering and technical staff, guiding on technical and policy matters.
• Review CIP plans, evaluate easement vacations, and approve overweight/over-limit permits.
• Prepare bid documents and manage contracted work for DOT-OPS projects.
• Provide engineering expertise across DOT-OPS divisions and coordinate with consultants and agencies.
• Manage grants and ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
• Serve as essential staff during county emergencies and support rapid response activities.
• Contribute to long-term planning and implement best practices to enhance department performance.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Program Leadership: Oversee key engineering programs, including bridge inspections, stormwater pipe lining, and toll bridge major maintenance.
• Team Supervision: Lead and develop engineering and technical staff, providing guidance on technical and policy matters.
• Plan & Permit Review: Review CIP plans, evaluate easement vacation requests, and approve overweight/over-limit permits.
• Contract Management: Prepare bid documents and manage outsourced contracted work for DOT-OPS projects.
• Technical Support: Provide engineering expertise across DOT-OPS divisions and coordinate with consultants, contractors, and agencies.
• Grant Administration: Manage grants and ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
• Emergency Response: Serve as essential staff during county emergencies and support rapid response activities.
• Operational Improvement: Contribute to long‑term planning and implement industry best practices to enhance department performance.

Education, Experience, Licensing

Minimum Requirements:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
• Experience: 2 years of engineering or closely related experience
• Licensing: Professional Engineer (PE) license
