Job summary

Hawthorne Cat in San Diego, CA is seeking an Engine Service Technician 1 to troubleshoot and repair Caterpillar and allied equipment in our service shop and on-site locations. Under supervision, you will estimate work orders and prepare quotes for the Lead Person or Service Supervisor, while ensuring safety and efficiency.

The ideal candidate has 0–3 years in heavy-truck/bus repair, strong Caterpillar knowledge, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to work with a variety of diagnostic

Qualifications

• Valid driver licenses as specified.
• 0–3 years experience in repair of on-highway trucks and buses.
• Strong knowledge of Caterpillar products and allied brands.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Furnish required hand tools for diagnostics and repair.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoots all Caterpillar and related systems.
• Uses test and diagnostic equipment to adjust engines and systems.
• Makes warranty recommendations.
• Performs minor welding, fabrication, plumbing alignment and DC electric repairs.
• Guides/supervises lower-level technicians in repairs of trucks and Caterpillar engines.
• Performs other duties as directed by foreman or service manager.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Engine Service Tech 1 troubleshoots mechanical problems in Caterpillar and allied products. With supervision, performs duties as assigned by management in the repair, maintenance and/or rebuilding of equipment in the service shop or field, in a safe, efficient and capable manner in the least amount of labor hours necessary and without re-work. Besides performing mechanical repair as directed, this position also estimates work orders and prepares written quotes for submission to the Lead Person and/or Service Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Troubleshoots all Caterpillar and related systems.
2. Uses all test and diagnostic equipment available to make adjustments to truck engines and systems.
3. Makes warranty recommendations.
4. Performs minor welding, fabrication, plumbing alignment and D.C. electric repairs.
5. Guides/supervises lower-level technicians in the repairs of trucks and Caterpillar engines.
6. Performs other duties as directed by foreman or service manager.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

1. Must have a valid Class C Drivers License with a clean driving record.
2. Must have a valid California Class B drivers license, if assigned vehicle requires.
3. Zero to three (0 to 3) years of experience in the repair of on-highway trucks and buses.
4. Expertise in all phases of on-highway truck service operation.
5. Full and positive knowledge of the Caterpillar product line and allied products.
6. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or can provide verification of all formal classroom study or hands on experience related to heavy equipment repairs.
7. Furnish all hand tools required to repair, test and diagnose hydraulic, air, power train, electrical, and electronic systems on all makes of trucks and Caterpillar engines.

NOTE: Some high dollar value tooling is supplied by Hawthorne Machinery Co.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Walking and moving about on foot often through uneven terrain.
2. Hands/arms operating equipment, hand and power tools.
3. Handling: Works with hands.
4. Lifting: Raises or lowers miscellaneous equipment parts and tools. Lifts up to 50 lbs. with frequent exertion
5. Reaching: Extends hands and arms in any direction.
6. Stooping: Bends body downward and forward by bending at knees or waist.
7. Standing: Remains in standing position if required for certain repair or maintenance work.
8. Climbing: In and out of equipment.
9. Vision: Reads work tickets, parts and service books and operate heavy equipment.
10. Talking: Communicates via telecommunications and in person.
11. Hearing: Hears well enough to discern mechanical problems for safety in and around shop and construction sites and to receive communication via telecommunications and in person.
12. Sitting: Sits in equipment and vehicles.
13. Lying: Lies in prone position under vehicles and equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL:

1. Noise: Works in conditions with constant or intermittent noise.
2. Temperatures/Weather: Works outside and in shop with variations of temperature and weather.
3. Exposure: Foul odors, fumes and harsh substances.
