About LiquidPiston

LiquidPiston, Inc. is a technology startup reinventing the internal combustion engine based on a patented thermodynamic cycle and novel rotary architecture. Our compact, high-efficiency engines power applications across defense, aerospace, and commercial sectors. At LiquidPiston, you’ll be part of a passionate team pushing the boundaries of what's possible in propulsion technology.

Position Overview

LiquidPiston is seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Engine Design & Development Engineer to join our core Skunkwerxs team. This role focuses on the design and development of rotary and piston engine components, supporting efforts from conceptual design through prototype validation. You will play a critical part in shaping next-generation propulsion systems that are smaller, lighter, and more efficient.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design key engine components including pistons, rods, crankshafts, rotors, and housings.
  • Develop CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks (preferred) or similar tools.
  • Conduct structural and thermal Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate component integrity.
  • Support prototype builds by collaborating with assembly technicians and manufacturing partners.
  • Apply best practices in engine assembly processes and documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews, failure analysis, and test result interpretation.
  • Integrate feedback from testing and validation into iterative design improvements.
  • Ensure alignment with DFM/DFA principles for smooth transition to production.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams (manufacturing, testing, controls, and quality) to achieve performance goals and meet development timelines.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Converge expert with demonstrated ability to conduct advanced CFD simulations for combustion, flow, and thermal analysis.
  • Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred; CATIA, NX, or similar acceptable).
  • FEA experience for stress and thermal analysis of engine components.
  • Understanding of engine durability testing protocols and failure analysis methods.
  • Familiarity with engine prototype development and validation practices.
  • Experience with engine assembly techniques and processes.
  • Strong knowledge of design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).
  • Understanding of engine design standards and best practices.
  • Proven ability to work in cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with machining processes and manufacturing requirements.
  • Proficient in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and metrology tools.
  • Good foundation in materials science and selection for high-performance engine parts.
  • Knowledge of vibration analysis and NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) principles.
  • Experience in lubrication system design, oil flow, and bearing analysis.
  • Understanding of cooling system design and thermal management principles.
  • Exposure to intake and exhaust system design.
  • Experience with engine dynamometer testing and data interpretation.
Benefits
  • Flexible PTO to encourage work-life balance and personal well-being
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage: medical, dental, and vision plans
  • Equity participation: RSUs for all permanent employees
  • 401(k) with match: 100% up to 3%, plus 50% match for 3–5% range
  • Growth opportunities: Mentorship, training, and leadership development
