Engine Builder III

Department: Manufacturing / Powertrain Operations

Reports To: Production Supervisor, Powertrain Lead, or Manufacturing Manager

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Engine Builder is responsible for the assembly, inspection, testing, troubleshooting, and rework of internal combustion engines and related powertrain systems used in Nexio vehicles and propulsion platforms. This position plays a critical role in ensuring engines are built safely, accurately, and in accordance with engineering specifications, quality standards, and production requirements.

Engine Builders work with engine blocks, rotating assemblies, cylinder heads, fuel systems, ignition systems, cooling systems, lubrication systems, and other powertrain components. Successful candidates possess strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to building products right the first time.

As experience and proficiency increase, Engine Builders progress from performing routine assembly tasks under supervision to independently completing complex engine builds, diagnostics, testing, mentoring, and process improvement activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assemble complete engines and subassemblies according to engineering drawings, work instructions, specifications, and build documentation.
  • Install and verify crankshafts, pistons, connecting rods, camshafts, cylinder heads, valve train components, fuel systems, ignition systems, and ancillary components.
  • Perform torque procedures and assembly sequencing using calibrated tools.
  • Verify critical dimensions, tolerances, clearances, and fitment requirements.
  • Maintain build records and documentation as required.
Inspection and Quality Assurance
  • Conduct visual and mechanical inspections throughout the assembly process.
  • Verify compliance with specifications, torque values, and quality standards.
  • Identify defects, discrepancies, and non-conforming conditions.
  • Support root-cause investigations and corrective actions.
Troubleshooting and Diagnostics
  • Diagnose assembly, performance, and mechanical issues.
  • Assist with engine testing, startup procedures, and performance validation.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, fuel, ignition, cooling, lubrication, and control system concerns.
  • Recommend corrective actions and repairs.
Safety and Compliance
  • Follow all company safety policies, PPE requirements, and shop procedures.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas using 5S principles.
  • Adhere to lockout/tagout and equipment safety requirements.
  • Handle fuels, lubricants, chemicals, and equipment safely.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives.
  • Support production efficiency, quality improvements, and waste reduction efforts.
  • Assist in developing and improving build procedures and work instructions.
Typical Experience
  • 7+ years of advanced engine building, powertrain assembly, motorsports, diesel, OEM manufacturing, or equivalent experience.
Responsibilities
  • Serves as a subject matter expert for engine assembly and diagnostics.
  • Leads complex prototype, development, and production builds.
  • Performs advanced troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
  • Supports engineering validation and testing activities.
  • Mentors and develops junior builders.
  • Recommends process, tooling, and quality improvements.
  • Frequently serves as technical lead on assigned projects.
Required Qualifications
  • Extensive experience building, rebuilding, diagnosing, or testing engines.
  • Advanced understanding of combustion systems and powertrain operations.
  • Ability to mentor and train others.
  • Demonstrated success troubleshooting complex mechanical issues.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.
  • Diesel, propane, alternative fuel, or industrial engine experience.
  • Performance engine or motorsports experience.
  • Manufacturing or production assembly experience.
  • Technical school, vocational training, or military mechanical training.
  • Experience with engine dynamometers or testing equipment.
  • Familiarity with propane-powered engine systems.
