Job summary

Mortenson is seeking an experienced Project Manager I/II for our Energy Storage Group. The role requires leadership of project teams, financial oversight, and active involvement in EPC contracting and vendor management.

Travel is 100% with assignments across multiple states. Ideal candidates will have a construction-focused degree, 6+ years of experience for PM I and 7+ years for PM II, and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or Construction Management
  • Minimum six years of related experience
  • Detail oriented with ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Understanding of construction law and business practices
  • Experience in EPC contracting or renewable energy is a plus
  • Microsoft Office, project and web apps at an intermediate level
  • Current driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Manage the overall financial health of projects
  • Lead EPC contract negotiations with customers, including scope of work and project schedules
  • Lead vendor procurement and bid/award for major subs and suppliers
  • Develop and maintain project financial projections and equipment projections
  • Determine and allocate project estimates in the financial system
  • Determine cost codes, approve invoices, and manage budgets
  • Provide financial and billing support to Accounting for timely payment
  • Create monthly owner billings
  • Manage subcontracts and suppliers, including contract buyouts
  • Oversee Assistant Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s)
  • Provide job assignments and career development for team
  • Approve time cards for on-site team
  • Provide ongoing feedback on performance

They should have the aptitude to anticipate problems, critical issues, and opportunities, and the capability to creatively problem-solve and develop viable solutions. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with attention to detail, are vital. The Project Manager will provide overall leadership direction, manage project quality and timeliness, mentor the project team, and develop and enhance customer relationships by providing excellent service.

Travel: 100% on a rotation

Locations: AZ, TX, CA, OK, Midwest, CO

This position offers opportunities at both levels 1 and 2, allowing candidates to apply based on their experience and qualifications. Compensation for this role is determined based on factors such as experience and location.

Responsibilities

Organization, flexibility, outstanding customer focus, and strong communication are critical in performing duties which include, but are not limited to:

Manage the overall financial health of projects

  • Support and potentially lead EPC contract negotiations with customers, including assembly of technical exhibits, the scope of work, and project schedules to align with contract requirements.
  • Leading vendor procurement and bid/award phase for all major subs and suppliers. Including RFP creation, vendor solicitation, technical scoping, risk analysis, budget alignment, and contract negotiations.
  • Develop and maintain project financial projections and equipment projections
  • Determine and allocate project estimates into the financial system
  • Determine cost codes, approve invoices, and make necessary budget management decisions
  • Provide financial and billings to Accounting for timely payment
  • Create monthly owner billings

Manage subcontracts and suppliers for the project

  • Oversee budget for and make selections of trade partners and suppliers
  • Handle billings and contract management, including contract buyouts

Manage Assistant Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s)

  • Provide job assignments and manage career development
  • Approve time cards for on-site team members
  • Provide ongoing feedback on work performance

Function as the main point of contact with the owner and on-site representative

  • Assist with the review of the owner agreement
  • Resolve site concerns for the owner or representative
  • Provide frequent interactions and service to build positive relationships and future work opportunities

Manage change orders

  • Determine when to submit to the owner or on-site representatives
  • Obtain the customer/architect’s approval

Qualifications

Project Manager I

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or Construction Management, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum six years of related previous experience
  • Proven ability to assist with all responsibilities for complex projects
  • Detail orientation sufficient to organize and manage multiple project tasks
  • Possess a basic understanding of construction law and generally accepted business practices
  • Preference for candidates with experience in one or more of the following: commercial construction, renewable energy project development, EPC contracting, or emerging technologies.
  • Microsoft Office, project and pertinent web application skills at an intermediate level
  • Proven positive and professional attitude, and strong customer service skills
  • Ability to interpret and communicate Mortenson policies
  • Current driver’s license

The base pay range for this role is $113,500 - $170,300

Project Manager II

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil, Electrical or Architectural Engineering or Construction Management, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum seven years of construction management or related experience with large projects
  • Proven ability to fulfill all responsibilities for complex projects
  • Detail orientation sufficient to organize and manage multiple project tasks
  • Possess basic understanding of construction law and generally accepted business practices
  • Microsoft Office, project, and pertinent web application skills at an intermediate level
  • Proven positive and professional attitude, and strong customer service skills
  • Ability to interpret and communicate Mortenson policies
  • Current driver’s license
  • Travel

The base pay range for this role is $132,100 - $198,200

(Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%).

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity. This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
