Job description

GM Performance Power Units - Concord, NC
Energy Management Engineer - Onsite

Job Summary

GM Performance Power Units is seeking a highly motivated Energy Management Engineer to support the development, testing, and trackside operations of our Formula 1 Power Unit. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, this role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a foundational area of our F1 program and join a world-class Electronics & Controls team. The Energy Management Engineer designs the control and measurement strategies that accurately track and estimate fuel and electrical energy usage across the power unit, ensuring full compliance with FIA regulations. These strategies are implemented on the TAG-700 control unit using the MA toolchain, forming a critical piece of the technical foundation that will lead to race wins for our advanced hybrid power unit, targeted for debut with the Cadillac F1 Team.

Key Responsibilities
Energy Measurement & Estimation Strategy
  • Design control and measurement strategies that accurately measure and estimate fuel energy consumption and electrical energy usage and electrical energy storage across the power unit. These strategies provide the foundation for compliant and competitive energy management across a race weekend.
  • Develop signal processing, sensor fusion, and estimation algorithms that translate raw fuel flow, battery, and electrical system measurements into accurate real-time energy accounting. Account for sensor tolerances, thermal effects, and other sources of measurement uncertainty.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of FIA Technical Regulations governing fuel mass, fuel energy, and electrical energy limits, ensuring that all measurement and control strategies are fully compliant and can be defended under technical scrutiny.
Control Strategy Development
  • Develop energy management control strategies that govern how fuel and electrical energy are deployed and recovered across a lap and a race, balancing performance targets against the energy and power limits defined by FIA regulations.
  • Work closely with the ICE Controls and ERS teams to integrate energy management strategies with combustion control, turbocharger management, MGU‑K torque delivery, and battery state of charge control, so that the power unit operates as a coherent system rather than a set of independently optimized parts.
  • Collaborate with the Vehicle Performance & Simulation team to align energy management strategy development with lap time simulation and race strategy modeling, ensuring that control strategies reflect a realistic and achievable energy budget across varied circuits and conditions.
TAG-700 Implementation & Toolchain
  • Implement energy management control strategies on the TAG-700 control unit using the MA toolchain, translating validated control logic into production embedded software that runs reliably within the constraints of the standard F1 control hardware.
  • Maintain and develop Simulink models and associated MA toolchain workflows used to generate, build, and deploy energy management software to the TAG-700, ensuring a clean and repeatable path from model to embedded code.
  • Support software release management for energy management functions, including version control, configuration management, and structured handover of validated software to the Trackside team.
Validation & Verification Support
  • Work closely with the HIL, Calibration, and Validation Engineers to define and execute test plans that verify energy management control strategies and measurement accuracy across the full range of expected operating conditions before software is cleared for dyno or track use.
  • Support Hardware-in-the-Loop and Software-in-the-Loop testing of energy management functions, reviewing test results and working with the HIL, Calibration, and Validation Engineers to resolve discrepancies between expected and observed behavior.
  • Contribute to the investigation of energy management anomalies identified during dyno testing or race events, working with reliability and controls colleagues to determine root cause and implement verified corrective actions.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline with a strong emphasis on control systems or energy systems.
  • 4 or more years of engineering experience in a controls, energy management, or powertrain systems within automotive, aerospace, or high-performance automotive.
  • Demonstrated experience developing measurement or estimation strategies for energy, fuel, or electrical systems in a regulated or performance-critical environment.
Technical Skills
  • Strong understanding of control theory and its application to energy management, including estimation techniques, closed-loop control design, and strategies for operating within hard regulatory limits.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB and Simulink for model-based control strategy development, and working familiarity with the MA toolchain or equivalent embedded code generation environments used for F1 standard ECU hardware.
  • Working knowledge of the TAG-700 control unit or equivalent F1 standard ECU hardware, including its software architecture and constraints.
  • Understanding of ICE and ERS system behavior sufficient to design energy management strategies that integrate cleanly with combustion, turbocharger, and hybrid system control.
  • Familiarity with Hardware-in-the-Loop and Software-in-the-Loop testing methodologies and their role in verifying control strategy behavior prior to deployment.
Interpersonal Skills
  • Precise and methodical in strategy development and documentation, with an understanding that energy management errors carry direct consequences for both compliance and race outcomes.
  • Effective collaborator across ICE Controls, ERS, Vehicle Performance & Simulation, and Validation teams, able to reconcile competing technical priorities into a coherent energy management approach.
  • Comfortable supporting dyno test schedules and race-weekend operations, including work outside standard hours when required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience developing energy management or fuel and electrical measurement strategies for an F1 or top-tier motorsport power unit.
  • Familiarity with fuel flow measurement systems and the technical challenges associated with accurate fuel energy accounting under FIA regulations.
  • Experience with battery management systems and electrical energy estimation for high-voltage hybrid systems.
  • Background in Functional Mock-up Unit development and co-simulation techniques as they apply to control strategy validation.
