Job summary

Hart Energy in Houston is seeking a seasoned journalist to cover the U.S. shale industry, including M&A, private equity activity, and capital markets shaping North America's upstream sector.

The reporter will deliver exclusive news, analysis, and data-driven enterprise reporting, with a focus on Permian, Eagle Ford, Bakken, Haynesville, Marcellus/Utica and related plays. You will build sources, analyze SEC filings, and work across digital platforms.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• 5+ years of reporting experience in energy, business, finance, or M&A.
• Proven ability to break news, cultivate sources, and produce exclusive journalism.
• Strong understanding of financial statements, transactions, capital markets, and business strategy.
• Ability to interpret SEC filings, investor presentations, earnings reports and operational data.
• Excellent writing, interviewing and analytical skills.
• Ability to manage multiple stories and deadlines in a fast-moving digital newsroom.
• Experience using analytics, research databases, and AI-assisted reporting tools for enterprise journalism.
• Portfolio showing breaking news and deep analytical reporting.

Responsibilities

• Break news with exclusive reporting on upstream oil and gas, transactions, and capital markets.
• Cover major shale basins and key operators, investors and service providers.
• Track company strategies, drilling, production trends, and reserves growth.
• Monitor SEC filings, investor presentations, earnings calls and regulatory filings.
• Develop and maintain a network of industry sources and dealmakers.
• Publish timely breaking news, analysis and data-driven enterprise reporting.
• Identify trends in consolidation, private capital deployment, and tech innovation.
• Collaborate with editors, podcast staff and events teams across platforms.
• Represent Hart Energy at conferences and industry events.
• Use analytics to optimize story performance and reader engagement.
