Job summary

Melrose Wakefield Hospital is seeking an Endoscopy Support Technician to assist with procedures under RN supervision and to maintain equipment and supplies. You will reprocess endoscopes, prepare rooms, and ensure readiness for subsequent procedures in a fast-paced surgical services area.

The role requires basic clinical understanding, attention to infection control, and the ability to work closely with nurses and physicians to support patient care during endoscopic procedures.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• One year of operating room experience.

Responsibilities

• Reprocess endoscopes according to infection control and hospital guidelines.
• Ensure equipment is in working order.
• Keep accurate documentation for cleaning and testing of equipment and supplies.
• Clean endoscopy procedure rooms after use and prepare for next procedure.
• Operate and handle equipment properly during endoscopic procedures.
• Collect, label, and transport specimens per policy.
• Inform Clinical leader of any equipment problems.
• Assist during endoscopic procedures.
• Escort patients into Procedure rooms and obtain baseline vitals and connect to monitoring equipment.
• Report unusual observations or patient reactions to the nurse or charge nurse.
• Adhere to infection control policies including hand hygiene and isolation protocols.
• Turn over procedure rooms promptly.
• Set up daily procedure rooms with Endoscopy protocols and physician preferences.
• Circulate to assist nurses and physicians pre/intra/post procedure.
• Obtain pre-procedure data under RN review (height, weight, allergies, NPO, etc.).
• Restock Endoscopy rooms and clean equipment daily.

In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Surgical Services duties: Responsible for medical services involving the excision or incision of a patient's body, such as interventional pain management and other procedures. This position also works to provide a safe environment for patients undergoing invasive procedures or surgery. A clinical technologist role that has specialized knowledge or skills gained through a combination of vocational education, training, and experience. This role will be most commonly applied to patient care and/or scientific/laboratory jobs. An entry-level role typically requiring little to no prior knowledge or experience and requiring vocational or technical education. Work is routine or follows standard procedures, is closely supervised, and communicates information that requires little explanation or interpretation.

This position is responsible for assisting with endoscopic procedures under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Also responsible for equipment and supply maintenance.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Properly reprocess endoscopes according to Infection control and hospital guidelines.

7. Informs Clinical leader of any equipment problems.
8. Performs as an assistant during endoscopic procedures.
9. Escorts patients into the Procedure rooms and obtains baseline vital signs and connects patient to monitoring equipment.
10. Reports all unusual observations or reactions of the patient to the nurse assigned to the patient or charge nurse.
11. Adheres to all infection control policies and procedures including hand hygiene, isolation protocol, and cleaning of patient care devices and equipment.
12. Turns over procedure rooms in a timely manner.
13. Sets up daily procedure rooms with established Endoscopy protocols and physician preferences.
14. Circulates regularly throughout unit to assist nurses and physicians as needed in pre, intra and post procedure.
15. Under the review of the RN obtains pre-procedure data, including but not limited to; height, weight, allergies, NPO status, post-procedure ride contact and call back number.
16. Restocks Endoscopy rooms and checking and cleaning equipment on a daily basis.

Physical Requirements

1. Occasional lifting of 30-35 lbs and turning patients.
2. Prolonged standing and walking. Occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, sitting, kneeling, and squatting.
3. Exposure to infectious disease and possible carcinogenic chemicals. Exposure of bloodborne pathogens.
4. Manual Dexterity Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulations for assisting in endoscopic procedures and computer keyboard.
5. Audible/Visual Demands: Requires ability to see computer screen, reports, and perform assistance in endoscopic procedures with accuracy.
6. Ability to hear instructions from physician and nursing staff.

1. Demonstrates a detailed knowledge of the different types of scopes and their use.
2. Demonstrates and verbalizes knowledge of aseptic technique.
3. Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
4. Ability to work with detailed and confidential information.
