Job summary

Advocate Health is hiring for an Endoscopy Unit Decontamination Technician at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center - Endoscopy Unit in Winston-Salem, NC. The role supports decontamination of scopes and instruments and ensures readiness for GI procedures.

You will operate Endora and related equipment, maintain documentation, and assist in delivering efficient patient throughput while following safety and infection control policies.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; six months related experience preferred.
  • Current BLS certification required; complete HLD training within three months of employment.
  • Proficient with endoscopy decontamination equipment and related instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Operate all decontamination equipment in designated areas and report issues.
  • Perform manual and automated decontamination of scopes and instruments.
  • Inspect and prepare scopes and instruments for use.
  • Assemble and package instruments per procedure room needs.
  • Maintain documentation of decontamination processes in the Endora system.
  • Store instruments in designated locations and arrange for sterilization as required.
  • Assist with specimen transport and workflow to support patient throughput.
  • Follow safety policies to prevent spread of bloodborne/ airborne contaminants.
  • Support GI procedures in critical care and OR settings as needed.
  • Participate in monthly meetings and educational trainings.
  • Assist team members and support lab workflows when required.
  • Protect self and coworkers by following facility policies.

Monday- Friday -0700-1730, 10 hour shifts. Call required.

Pay Range:

$20.80 - $31.20

  • EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE : High school diploma or GED equivalent. Six months of related experience preferred.

  • LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: Current BLS certification required. Complete high-level disinfection (HLD) training with first three months of employment with annual renewal.

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Operates all department equipment in designated decontamination areas and promptly reports issues to the Assistant Nurse Manager of Endoscopy. 2. Performs manual and/or automated decontamination of scopes and other instruments. 3. Inspects scopes and instruments to ensure cleanliness and proper functionality. 4. Assembles scopes and instruments into proper carrying containers according to procedure room needs. 5. Packages special instruments according to manufacturer’s instructions. 6. Performs required decontamination and verifies adequacy of the process. 7. Maintains documentation of decontamination processes utilizing Endora system. 8. Stores scopes and other instruments in identified location. 9. Collects instruments for special sterilization, delivers to the specific areas for sterilization, and picks up instruments post sterilization process for storage or immediate use in the Endoscopy unit. 10. Participates in the department’s monthly meetings and educational training opportunities. 11. Assists other team members as needed, such as delivery of specimen to the pathology laboratory area and other errands assisting workflow and patient throughput. 12. Protects self, coworkers, and facility by following policies and procedures concerning the prevention of spreading blood borne and or airborne contaminates/diseases. 13. Exhibits competency in assisting general endoscopic procedures within the Endoscopy unit, at the patient?s bedside in critical care, and in OR such as EGD, colonoscopy, specimen collection, snares, biopsy forceps, and dilations.

  • SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS : Proficient communication skills Ability to operate equipment such as Endora tracking system, Medivators, Dri-scope, Veriscan, Scope Buddy, and other devices related to scope decontamination and disinfecting of other instruments Knowledge of instrument IFU?s, care/disposal of solutions in use in the decontamination room, and scope/scope cabinet cleaning schedules Ability to show competency in scope handling during general GI procedures such as EGD, colonoscopy, use of snares and biopsy forceps, dilation procedures, and assistance in doing travel GI cases in critical care and OR

  • WORK ENVIRONMENT : Exposure to hazards associated with bodily fluids and tissue Regular exposure to the risk of blood borne diseases Exposure to chemical agents used in cleaning Subject to varying and unpredictable situations Subject to many interruptions Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries Exposure to some sharp instruments that may result in cuts or abrasions
