Job summary

Penn Medicine is seeking an Endoscopy Technician to support the Endoscopy Department with sterile instrument handling, decontamination, sterilization, and distribution of supplies. You will document processes, maintain equipment, and help ensure unit readiness and patient safety.

Responsibilities include assembling and dispensing instruments, stocking storerooms, mentoring new staff, and participating in quality initiatives such as SCIP and Joint Commission standards across the department.

Qualifications

• High School diploma required.
• Completion of a sterilization/processing course required.
• CER (Certified Endoscope Reprocessor) certification preferred at hire or within one year.

Responsibilities

• Disassembles, cleans, inspects, prepares, assembles, sterilizes and dispenses surgical/instrumentation for Endoscopy.
• Maintains sterile supply inventory for customer departments and communicates requests/delivery needs.
• Decontaminates, sterilizes, and processes instrumentation and trays per infection control guidelines.
• Operates washers, ultrasonic equipment, and sterilizers (steam, plasma).
• Dispenses and delivers sterilized instruments to customer units.
• Audits supplies and inventories; notifies Lead when levels are low.
• Stocks shelves and storerooms; processes orders for supplies.
• Develops knowledge through practice and continuing education; mentors new employees.
• Supports SCIP, iCare values, Joint Commission standards, and Magnet initiatives.

General Summary Statement

The Endoscopy Technician carries out the safe collection of used medical equipment and instrumentation followed by decontamination, sterilization, assembling, and testing as required. The Endoscopy Technician is responsible for documentation, maintenance, and distribution of medical supplies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Employee disassembles, cleans, inspects, prepares, assembles, sterilizes and dispenses surgical and procedure instrumentation and trays for the Endoscopy department according to prescribed procedures and aseptic techniques.
• Assists in the process of providing customer departments with appropriate sterile supply inventory.
• Maintains communication with customer departments regarding requests and delivery of sterile supplies.
• Decontaminates, prepares, processes, and sterilizes surgical and procedure instrumentation, trays and sets for the Endoscopy Department, utilizing established infection control guidelines and appropriate methodologies and techniques.
• Operates instrumentation washers, ultrasonic equipment, and sterilizers (steam, plasma) in the Endoscopy Department.
• Responsible for dispensing and delivery of sterilized instruments and trays to customer units and areas.
• Audits supplies and inventory levels and notifies the Endoscopy Clinical Lead when levels are low.
• Assists in processing orders for supplies maintained from the storeroom.
• Employee is responsible for unpacking and stocking supplies on shelves and in storage areas.
• Develops own knowledge via practice, observation, and continuing education programs. Promotes best practice by demonstrating a commitment to quality patient care.
• Serves as a preceptor and mentor for new employees.
• Supports organizational programs including SCIP, iCare Values, Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification, Nursing Councils, and Magnet initiatives. Performs job duties in accordance with these standards.
• Maintains work area and equipment in working order. Uses equipment appropriately and follows department policies and appropriate IFUs regarding equipment and supply use, cleaning, and maintenance.
• Performs assigned duties to maintain unit in a state of survey readiness and maintain quality initiatives. For example, quality control measures, emergency equipment checks, and department cleanliness.

Education Training and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent (Required)

Completion of a sterilization/processing course (Required)

Licensure/Certification

CER (Certified Endoscope Reprocessor) certification through IAHCSMM preferred at hire or must be obtained within one year of hire (Required)
