Job summary

Katmai Government Services in San Diego is seeking a dedicated Endoscopy Support Specialist to assist physicians during GI procedures, maintain sterile technique, and ensure readiness of instruments and rooms. You will coordinate supplies, monitor patient safety, and support the clinical team throughout complex endoscopic cases.

Job description

Summary

Assist physicians with diagnostic, therapeutic, and emergency endoscopic procedures by preparing patients, equipment, instruments, and procedure rooms, maintaining sterile technique, operating and calibrating specialized equipment, monitoring patients, and providing support throughout procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform the full spectrum of sterile techniques, setting up surgical trays, preparing and draping patients for surgery, and assisting with post-operative dressings
• Ensure surgical packs are cleaned and packed for sterilization after every procedure, to include restocking surgical supplies
• Maintain a clean, safe environment for the patient either by active participation in the cleaning of clinical spaces, operating rooms, and medical equipment, or by guiding other personnel in the environmental maintenance
• Attend and/or comply with all annual training classes required by the Command
• Assist the adult and pediatric Gastroenterologist (GI) or the Surgeon in various clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic and emergency procedures. Serves as first assistant to the physician in esophagogastro-duodenoscopies (EGD), colonoscopies, flexible sigmoidoscopies, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placements, push enteroscopy, anoscopies, small bowel push enteroscopies, peritoneoscopies (PEG), liver biopsies, and single balloon enteroscopies, Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasounds (EUS), paracentesis
• Assist with all types of dilations (i.e., Maloney dilations, wire guided Savary-Gillard dilations, and endoscopic balloon dilations)
• Assist with esophageal or colonic stent placements
• Assist with endoscopic biopsies and polypectomies
• Independently set up and performs Capsule Endoscopy (esophageal or small bowel), and 24-hour PH studies
• Set up and operates the monitoring and recording devices. Independently performs esophageal manometry, which requires specific training and knowledge of esophageal anatomy and physiology, as well as basic ability to interpret testing
• Calibrate equipment as necessary to perform procedure
• Prepare a summary of the test results and forward the report to the physician
• Serve as first assistant to the physician in various specialized therapeutic endoscopic procedures such as Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography (ERCP) with possible therapies such as biliary stone extraction, biliary stent placement, and biliary drainage tube placements
• Coordinate with the Department of Radiology personnel to secure X-ray and fluoroscopy rooms. Also serve as first assistant to the physician in the specialized treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding
• Evaluate the patient's condition and determine the proper treatment procedure, technique, and compatible instrument adjustments. Independently set up the electrosurgery unit and/or Argon/Plasma coagulator for therapies
• Interpret the physician's instructions and, as required for certain procedures, draw medications, mix solutions, inject dyes, read graphic printouts, and prepare needles, syringes, catheters, and/or balloons. Recognize potential problems with patients
• Maintain regular and punctual attendance
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

• Must have an Associate's degree
• Must have at least one (1) year of experience in gastroenterology services (endoscopy and colonoscopy) within the last two years
• Must have an Active BLS Certification
• Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks

Desired Qualifications & Skills

• A Certified Nursing Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician certification preferred
• Basic knowledge of pharmacology, including drug classification and administration, patient responses, and common dosages

Work Schedule

Full-time. May be required to work additional hours as needed to complete assignment or project. On-Call Hours: Will be required to report in-person to the MTF during on-call hours if needed. Shall provide on-call services between the hours of 1700 and 0700 Monday through Friday and 24 hours on Weekends and Holidays. Shall provide one week of on-call services approximately every 6 to 8 weeks.

Work Environment

Work is performed in clinical, endoscopy, and surgical procedure areas. Employee may be exposed to medical equipment, bodily fluids, infectious materials, cleaning and disinfecting agents, and varying levels of noise. Position requires frequent interaction with patients, physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel.

Physical Demands

Position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and use of hands for handling medical instruments and equipment. Employee may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull medical equipment and supplies and assist with positioning or transporting patients. The position may require prolonged standing during procedures and the ability to respond quickly to patient emergencies.
