Job summary

Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System in Chester County, West Chester is seeking a Surgical Technician to provide patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role involves performing clinical care in various stages of endoscopy procedures and ensuring proper operation of endoscopy equipment.

The ideal candidate is a graduate of a Surgical Technician program, has preferred operating room experience, and maintains required certifications. The position includes a comprehensive benefits program.

  • Operating Room experience preferred.
  • Maintains CPR, TST and Education certifications.

  • Performs clinical care in the pre‑procedure, intra‑procedure and post‑procedure phases of the patient’s endoscopy procedure.
  • Participates in the patient’s plan of care under direction of RN.
  • Assumes responsibility for the operation, care and handling of the endoscopy scope and instrumentation.

General Summary Statement

Provides patient care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. Performs duties that support the operation of the nursing unit. Adheres to Nursing Policies and Procedures and Organizational Goals and Objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides age‑appropriate care for the patient population served, considering growth and developmental phase, thermal regulation, nutrition, safety, and infection prevention.
  • Uses appropriate resources for patients with special needs such as language barriers, sensory problems, altered cognition, cultural and religious needs.
  • Integrates principles of infection control and prevention into practice, using standard precautions and personal protective equipment.
  • Adheres to aseptic technique and respects the dignity and confidentiality of endoscopy patients, meeting psychosocial needs.
  • Utilizes resources and references for reviewing policies, procedures and information needed to complete job duties.
  • Prioritizes and organizes work effectively within assigned shift.
  • Performs procedures within the scope of the Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Performs clinical care in the pre‑procedure, intra‑procedure and post‑procedure phases of the patient’s endoscopy procedure.
  • Demonstrates competency to perform the assistant role in assigned endoscopy procedures.
  • Participates in the patient’s plan of care under direction of RN.
  • Anticipates the needs of the physician and assistant during endoscopy procedures.
  • Assumes responsibility for the operation, care and handling of the endoscopy scope and any other instrumentation.
  • Performs proper cleaning and decontamination procedures when the case is completed; reports any broken or malfunctioning equipment in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates with the team to assist in attaining cost‑effective service provisions to minimize waste and improper utilization of supplies and materials.
  • Identifies and utilizes appropriate instrumentation for the proper function of all equipment.
  • Checks sterile supplies for packaging, integrity and expiration dates when introduced to the sterile field.
  • Provides accurate care and handling of all specimens and cultures.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics when moving patients, equipment or lifting trays.
Education, Training and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent. Graduate of a Surgical Technician program (required). Operating Room experience preferred. Maintains CPR, TST and Education on the Go within CCH deadlines.

Licensure and Certification

CPR certification required. Must meet specialty specific competency requirements: Aseptic Technique, Sterilization, Electrosurgical Unit and Positioning.
