Job summary

Atrium Health’s Surgical Specialists - High Point is hiring a Medical Assistant (Scribe) to support daily clinic operations in the High Point Westwood General Surgery practice. The role provides vital support during patient visits, documents encounters in the EMR, and coordinates care with the care team.

Expect 40-hour weeks, Monday to Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm, with pay range of $22.90–$34.35 per hour; requires BLS and MA certification.

Qualifications

  • BLS for Healthcare Providers certification required.
  • CMA, CCMA, NCMA or RMA certification from recognized bodies required.
  • GED or HS diploma and graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in daily Care Team Huddles to ensure collaborative care for every patient.
  • Reviews patient records for upcoming visits and abstracts pertinent data.
  • Greets patients, documents vital signs, reconciles medications and allergies.
  • Enters findings and orders in the EMR and provides patient education.
  • Performs clerical tasks such as scheduling and records handling as needed.

Located on the campus of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist High Point Medical Center, Surgical Specialists - High Point offers comprehensive care for patients, including general surgery, breast care, hernia surgery, colorectal surgery, endocrine surgery, among others. From same-day, outpatient surgery to complex inpatient procedures, our surgeons offer expertise in a wide variety of specialties and have extensive training in robotic-assisted surgery and advanced laparoscopic techniques.

Licensure, Registration, And/or Certification Required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)
Must have a CMA or RMA by one of the following National Organizations REQUIRED
  • CMA from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
  • CCMA from National Health career Association (NHA)
  • NCMA from National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • RMA from American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  • RMA from American Allied Health
  • NCMSMA from National Healthcare Worker’s Association (NHCWA)
  • NRCMA from National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
  • NRMA from National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA)
Education Required
  • GED or HS Equivalency Diploma.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program required
Experience Required
  • One year of Scribe experience, preferred
  • Previous experience in medical practice preferred.
Essential Functions
  • Participates in daily Care Team Huddles to ensure collaborative care is given to each patient on every visit
  • Performs review of patient's medical records for upcoming, scheduled clinic visit. Abstracts pertinent data related to activity within the healthcare system since last visit, quality indicators and the patient's personal clinical goals of therapy. Makes notes as necessary to serve as a reminder of issues that need to be addressed during the clinic visit.
  • Greets and escorts patient to the exam room. Obtains and documents all pertinent vital signs and measurements. Assesses medication regimen in detail to evaluate each medication and dosage currently in the EMR and any newly reported medications or dosages. Notes any discrepancies to discuss with provider. Reconciles allergies.
  • Engages patient in conversation regarding reason for visit and overall health. Assesses for social environment, gaps in care, quality measures and progression and/or barriers to reaching the goals of therapy.
  • Prepares chart with any labs or other data for ease of access for provider, including reminders for quality indicators.
  • Remains in the exam room, enters all findings, including physical exam and assessment provider notes. Enters provider orders and plan of care instructions, including prescriptions. Provides instructions to patient and educational materials based on the exam findings. Informs patient for timing of next visit and directs to check out for scheduling.
  • Documents all activities/interventions, patient/family responses, medication dispensed/prescribed in the electronic medical record.
  • Fulfills other patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow; assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam; and answering calls.
  • Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned. May include sending/receiving medical records and reports; facilitation of referrals; completing forms and requisitions; scheduling appointments; insurance verification and pre-certification activities.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation during in-service meetings, educational programs, conferences, and participate in committees as requested. Adheres to applicable states controlled substance regulations.
  • Practices universal precautions and properly handle blood and body fluids and deal with infectious patients.
  • Completes training related to hierarchical condition category (HCC) coding and demonstrate competency by appropriately when transcribing patient visits.

Knowledge of computer systems and applications Advanced typing and navigation skills within the electronic medical record system Critical thinking skills Solid oral and written communication skills Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, disease specific goals of treatment, and assessment skills Knowledge of medical documentation guidelines and practices including legal responsibilities related to confidentiality Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the designated field Knowledge of organizational policies, procedures and protocols Knowledge of common safety hazards and universal precautions to establish a safe work environment

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Combination of medical office and exam/procedure room settings Well-lit, well-ventilated, and adequate space Frequent exposure to diseases, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform repetitive hand movements throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds as required
