Job summary

Job Summary

To provide a 24‑hour emergency and non‑emergency ambulance service with state‑approved personnel. Secondary duties include maintaining up‑to‑date knowledge of Missouri laws governing ambulances and personnel. The employee supports the Village’s mission, values, and service/hospitality (PRIDE) expectations and completes required training hours as per policy.

Essential Job Functions
  • Administers basic life support to and transports sick or injured persons to a medical facility, working as a member of the emergency medical team.
  • Responds to instructions from the dispatcher and drives the specifically equipped emergency vehicle to the specified location.
  • Monitors communication equipment to maintain contact with the dispatcher.
  • Removes or assists in the removal of victims from the scene of an accident or catastrophe.
  • Determines the nature and extent of illness or injury, the magnitude of the catastrophe, follows medical protocols or determines the need for additional assistance, and bases decisions on statements of persons involved, examination of victim(s), and knowledge of emergency medical practice.
  • Administers prescribed basic life support at the site of the emergency or in the vehicle, performing activities such as application of splints, administration of oxygen, treatment of minor wounds or abrasions, and artificial resuscitation.
  • Communicates with professional medical personnel at the emergency treatment facility to obtain instructions regarding further treatment and to arrange for the reception of victims.
  • Assists treatment‑center admitting personnel to obtain and record information related to victims’ vital statistics and circumstances of the emergency.
  • Maintains vehicles and medical and communication equipment and replenishes first‑aid equipment and supplies.
  • May assist professional medical personnel in emergency treatment administered at the medical facility.
  • Adheres to all safety regulations and requirements.
  • Handles stress well and gets along with others within the workplace and with customers outside the department.
  • Maintains acceptable standards of workplace conduct.
Education
  • High school diploma or GED.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Missouri State EMT‑B and CPR certifications (required).
  • Missouri Class E driver’s license or equivalent.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Basic level keyboarding skills.
  • Must maintain CEU hours required by current EMT and CPR certifications.
  • Experience with investigations of incidents and conflicts.
  • Experience using an ambulance.
  • Experience using an oxygen tank, airways, suction equipment, respirator, and heart monitor.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, handbooks and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other associates.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Excellent customer service skills (required).
Special Working Conditions
  • Subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, including temperatures below 32 °F and above 100 °F for periods exceeding one hour.
  • Subject to sufficient noise to require shouting to be heard above ambient noise.
  • Subject to vibration of the extremities or the whole body.
  • Subject to hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, work on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or chemicals.
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions affecting respiratory and skin systems: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
  • Subject to exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.
  • Frequently in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, man‑holes, small enclosed rooms, sewage and water line pipes, and other claustrophobia‑risk areas.
  • Required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.
  • Exposed to infectious diseases.
  • Required to function around individuals with challenged mental capacities.
  • May be called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.
Physical and Mental Demands
  • Very heavy work – exerting over 100 lbs occasionally, over 50 lbs frequently, and over 20 lbs constantly to move objects.
  • Requires visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and similar structures.
  • Balancing to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow or slippery surfaces.
  • May need to stoop, bend, kneel, crawl, or reach.
  • Standing for sustained periods.
  • Walking for long distances or between work sites.
  • May need to push, pull, lift with regular or repetitive motion.
  • May need to pick up, pinch, type, or grasp with fingers and palm.
  • May need to feel an object’s attributes by touching with fingertips.
  • Talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by voice with clarity, volume, or speed.
  • Hearing to perceive normal speaking levels and make fine discriminations.
  • Repetitive wrist, hand, and finger movements.
Supervision

Receives work direction from the Public Safety Supervisor or Public Safety Manager and the Lead Paramedic. Provides no direct supervision.
