Responsibilities
- Performs all aspects of BLS pre-hospital patient care during emergency medical service incidents.
- Determines the nature and extent of medical and injury-related problems, follows established treatment protocols, and transports patients to the appropriate receiving medical care facility.
- Performs manual and technical duties and responsibilities required to mitigate emergency medical incidents.
- Follows established regulations (12 VAC 5-31), standard operating procedures, and regional protocols in the application of pre-hospital care and in completing job duties.
- Supervises and provides patient care at the scene of emergency incidents, as needed.
- Completes and maintains accurate records and documentation related to transport, equipment inspection, supplies usage, incidents, and other documentation inherent in the operation.
- Provides support for fire and hazardous material activities as required by the Incident Commander, which may include fire suppression, EMS standby, patient care, overhaul operations, safety officer responsibilities, rehabilitation sector standby, and related duties.
- Inspects and promptly reports damage, deficiencies, safety issues, or other problems with ambulances, department vehicles, equipment, or any other matters relevant to safe, efficient operation.
- Checks and maintains assigned medical equipment; ensures supplies, medications, and other expendables are maintained at the desired level.
- Completes day-to-day station chores (e.g., cleaning, laundry, maintenance, trash removal).
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality patient care.
- Participates in public relations, educational, recruitment, and retention programs as directed by the Deputy Director - EMS.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED
- Current Virginia Emergency Medical Technician – Basic certification
- Certification as Firefighter 1 or enrolled in a Firefighter 1 course within one year of employment
- Preferred one year of active emergency medical services experience at the level of EMT-Basic
- Current certification in EVOC, and CPR
- Current National Incident Management System IS-700 and IS-100
- Requires completion of National Incident Management System IS-200 within 120 days of employment
- Successfully complete a pre-employment physical, illicit drug screening, and criminal background check
- Valid Virginia Drivers’ License and insurability under the County’s policy
- Desirable: Previous experience in combination, career and volunteer public safety setting
- Certification in Vehicle Extrication
- Certification as Firefighter II
