Qualifications

  • Valid Arizona EMT-B certification.
  • National Registry EMT-B certification.
  • Completion of a state-approved training program.
  • Six months to one year EMS field experience.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification.
  • PHTLS strongly recommended.
  • English and Navajo language skills preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license, insurability, and background check.

Responsibilities

  • Triage and provide immediate or urgent treatment within scope of practice.
  • Deliver medical care under online/offline medical direction.
  • Drive an emergency vehicle to the location.
  • Administer first-aid and transport to a medical facility.
  • Assist in patient handling and data collection for records.
  • Maintain equipment, vehicles, and stock of supplies.

Job Overview

Under general supervision of the EMS Manager and the EMS Assistant Manager, the EMT Basic delivers emergency and basic medical care in a fast‑paced pre‑hospital setting, often handling inter‑facility transports to receiving hospitals. Uphold the principles of WIHCC’s Vision, Mission, and Value Statements and maintain confidentiality of all privileged information at all times.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Triage and provide immediate or urgent treatment according to patient status and level of care needed within scope of practice.
  • Deliver medical care based on scope of practice and online/offline medical direction.
  • Respond to instructions from the emergency medical dispatcher and drive a specially equipped emergency vehicle to the specified location.
  • Administer first‑aid treatment and transport sick or injured persons to a medical facility, working as a member of the emergency medical team.
  • Assist in removal of victims from the scene of an accident or catastrophe.
  • Determine the nature and extent of illness or injury and establish first‑aid procedures or the need for additional assistance.
  • Administer prescribed first‑aid treatment at the site of the emergency or in the vehicle.
  • Communicate with professional medical personnel at the treatment facility to obtain instructions for further treatment and to arrange reception of victims.
  • Assist admission personnel in recording victim vital statistics and emergency circumstances.
  • Maintain vehicles, medical and communication equipment, and replenish first‑aid and medical supplies.
  • Prepare patient care reports and charts.
  • Operate or set up specialized equipment such as cardiac monitors, defibrillators, EKG machines, ventilators, oxygen tanks, etc.
  • Attend continuing education, staff meetings, workshops, and serve on QM/HP teams or committees to maintain professional knowledge and skill.
  • Arrange and coordinate needed transport for patients via ground or flight as required.
  • Assist UCC and clinic staff with patient care as assigned during periods with no transports.
  • Remain on‑call as needed.
  • Adhere to all professional and ethical behavior standards of the healthcare industry and WIHCC personnel policies.
  • Interact honestly, trustworthily, and dependably with patients, employees, visitors, and vendors.
  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity and maintain compliance with all human resources requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Valid Arizona and National Registry EMT‑Basic certification.
  • Completion of a state‑approved and accredited training program.
  • Six months to one year of EMS field experience.
  • Proficiency in Basic Emergency Cardiac Life Support, Basic Trauma Life Support, and Pediatric emergency care.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification.
  • PHTLS strongly recommended.
  • Bilingual skills in English and Navajo language preferred.
  • Valid unrestricted and insurable driver’s license.
  • Successful background investigation and fulfillment of Child Care position requirements, including the ICPFVP Act.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county, and local laws and regulations, including HIPAA, HITECH, EMTALA, and OSHA.
  • Knowledge of emergency management principles and practices.
  • Basic knowledge of confidentiality principles.
  • Basic computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Skill in operating specific clinical equipment.
  • Ability to assess situations and take appropriate action under stressful and hazardous circumstances.
  • Ability to prepare accurate, complete, and legible reports and present objective oral presentations.
  • Ability to operate tools, apparatus, vehicles, and equipment safely.
  • Ability to read and interpret small items and equipment readouts.
  • Ability to lift, position, and/or transfer patients and lift supplies up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work with latex products routinely.
  • Ability to follow extensive safety precautions and use protective equipment.
  • Ability to detect subtle changes in breath sounds, heart sounds, blood pressure, etc.
  • Dependable attendance and job performance.
  • Compliance with attendance, overtime, and reliability requirements.

Physical Demands

The employee routinely walks, sits, uses hands, reaches, speaks, and hears. Frequently stands, climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls, and occasionally uses taste or smell. May lift or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds.

Work Environment

Work is performed in an office or outdoor setting with moderate noise levels. Exposure may include blood‑borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, or dangerous equipment. Adherence to safety protocols is required. Schedules may include evening, weekend, overnight shifts, extended hours, or irregular rotations.
