Job summary

Covenant Health is seeking an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for PRN/OCC, variable hours per pay period, with varied shifts at Covenant Health EMS sites in Knoxville, TN. The EMT responds to medical emergencies in pre-hospital and interfacility settings, performs triage, initial assessment, and emergency care within licensed scope.

Qualifications

• Two years of EMS or healthcare experience preferred.
• Licensure: TN EMS license or valid unrestricted license in any Compact State.
• Valid driver’s license and state mandated insurance.
• Driving record must meet Covenant Health standards.
• Complete Covenant Health training and state continuing education requirements.

Responsibilities

• Administer epinephrine for anaphylaxis and manage airway/oxygen with a BIAD as approved.
• Provide emergency care for acute illness, trauma, behavioral health emergencies, or chronic conditions.
• Report essential information to the receiving medical personnel.
• Coordinate with EMS dispatchers and facilities via radio and maintain compliant communications.
• Perform vehicle maintenance checks and restock/clean after each call; refuel as needed.
• Adhere to Covenant Health EMS dress code and participate in required trainings.
• Travel locally as required.
• Follow policies, safety standards; participate in quality improvement initiatives.

Emergency Medical Services Overview:

Covenant Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS) ensures rapid response with specially trained personnel and a fleet of vehicles that are equipped with cutting-edge technology. The Covenant Health EMS team improves patient care and outcomes, supports post-discharge planning, and enhances community engagement. Working closely with all Covenant medical centers as well as several non-Covenant facilities, our EMS team ensures that advanced-level transport options are available when needed.

Position Summary:

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a public safety professional that responds to medical emergencies and other medical transport needs in pre-hospital and interfacility settings. Upon arrival, the EMT performs triage and initial survey, provides emergency care through careful assessment of the patient, and recognizes injuries and illnesses. The EMT shall also gain knowledge of pre-existing medical conditions, previous medications, medical preferences, and identification of the patient.

Responsibilities

• After proper training, the EMT may administer epinephrine for the treatment of anaphylaxis, airway management and/or oxygen administration with a Blind-Insertion airway device (BIAD), and provide other interventions within their scope of practice as approved by the EMS Medical Director.
• Renders necessary emergency care for acute illness or injury, including medical emergencies, traumatic injury, behavioral health emergencies, or other associated care of chronic comorbid conditions.
• Reports essential information concerning the patient, the patient's medical condition, and treatment to the medical personnel who assume responsibility for continuing care of the patient.
• Utilizes EMS telecommunications for coordination and information exchange with EMS dispatchers, medical facilities, online medical control, and other system users, and conducts radio transmissions appropriately with regard for rules, regulations, and procedures.
• Responsible for routine daily maintenance checks on the vehicle assigned to them and records results on the vehicle maintenance checklist; properly cleans and restocks assigned vehicles after each call; and refuels vehicle (at the designated service stations) after each call or when tank is less than 1/2 full.
• Adheres to the Covenant Health EMS dress code while on duty.
• Completes all mandatory Covenant Health training, mandatory Covenant Health EMS in-service training, as well as additional independent training to meet State of Tennessee minimal continuing education requirements.
• Local travel required.
• Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.

Minimum Experience:

Two (2) years of experience in EMS or in another healthcare setting preferred.

Licensure Requirement:

Must have and maintain a TN EMS license OR a valid, unrestricted license in any Compact Member State. Employee must have a valid driver's license and state mandated minimum insurance coverage. Driving record must meet Covenant Health minimum standards at the date of hire and throughout employment tenure.
