Job summary

Builders FirstSource in Austin, TX is offering a trainee opportunity as part of the Component Technician/Truss Designer function. The role focuses on developing your skills through a structured 16-week training program, including online, classroom, and hands-on experience.

You will learn to read blueprints, prepare basic truss designs, and collaborate with sales and senior designers. A related associate degree or equivalent experience is preferred, with framing knowledge a plus.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree in a directly related field or equivalent construction/design experience.
• Prior shop experience or construction knowledge preferred.
• Framing experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision of a design manager, completes all phases of the Truss Designer training program.
• Prepares basic roof and/or floor truss designs by reading blueprints and conferring with sales/customers.
• Computes plan dimensions and enters design parameters into specialized software.
• Reviews plans with experienced designers to ensure accuracy and standards.
• Produces truss placement layouts for final construction.
• Provides job-site support with sales or senior designers when requested.
• Learns pricing methods and drafts bid proposals.
• Prepares for and takes tests required for certification.
