Job summary

Richland County is seeking a Public Defender Attorney I to represent indigent adults and juveniles in less serious criminal matters in Richland County courts. You will prepare for bench and jury trials, file motions, interview clients, witnesses and law enforcement, and coordinate with social services as needed.

Requires Juris Doctor, active SC bar, and a valid SC driver’s license. No experience is required; criminal law experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor.
• Must have a valid SC law license and be admitted to the SC Bar.
• Must possess and maintain current membership in the SC Bar Association.

Responsibilities

• Prepares and argues criminal cases in court.
• Drafts own legal documents with little to no supervision or oversight.
• Meets with clients in the courthouse, at jails, and at correctional or detention facilities; meets with partner agencies.
• Plans and gives presentations to various community civic organizations as requested.
• Maintains files and notes related to representation.
