Position Summary

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University (SSVM) seeks Veterinary Assistants and Veterinary Technicians to join our Emergency Service veterinary program at our new teaching hospital. SSVM is a new veterinary teaching hospital for small animals with state-of-the-art equipment and multiple specialty departments, including anesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, dentistry and oral surgery, diagnostic imaging, emergency/critical care, exotics, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, primary care, and a full pharmacy with sterile compounding capabilities. These positions will support the clinical services in the teaching hospital by treating patients and educating students. Selected candidates will be able to:<\/p>

Reporting Structure

The Veterinary Assistants and Veterinary Technicians will report directly to the Veterinary Technician Manager.

Required Qualifications & Salary Information

The starting rate for each level is equivalent to the probationary rate listed below based on the collective bargaining unit guidelines. After completion of a six-month probationary period, the employee’s pay can increase to the "Job Rate" for that position. Depending on experience, the candidate may be hired at the "Job Rate" to start.

Veterinary Technicians (Credentialed, evidence of passing the VTNE)

• Level 1
  • Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) certification eligible or achieved, or equivalent specialty-level expertise
  • Minimum 5 years clinical experience
    • Probationary Rate: $32.25/hour
    • Job Rate: $35.40/hour
    • Max Rate: $38.05/hour
• Level 2
  • Minimum 5 years clinical experience
    • Probationary Rate: $28.05/hour
    • Job Rate: $31.00/hour
    • Max Rate: $33.20/hour
• Level 3
  • Minimum 3 years clinical experience
    • Probationary Rate: $23.08/hour
    • Job Rate: $26.55/hour
    • Max Rate: $29.97/hour

Veterinary Assistants (Non-Credentialed)

• Level 1
  • Associate degree or higher
  • Minimum 5 years clinical experience
    • Probationary Rate: $23.08/hour
    • Job Rate: $26.55/hour
    • Max Rate: $29.97/hour
• Level 2
  • Associate degree or higher
  • Minimum 3 years clinical experience
    • Probationary Rate: $19.87/hour
    • Job Rate: $22.48/hour
    • Max Rate: $24.86/hour

*Hourly rates reflect each position’s pay post 7/1/25 per the collective bargaining agreement.

*Employees must have 4+ years of applicable experience to be hired above the probationary rate per the collective bargaining agreement.

Shift Differential

*Members of the Teamsters negotiations unit will also be eligible for a shift differential of $2.00 per hour. The shift differential will be paid to eligible employees for complete shifts only and provided that they work half or more of their regularly scheduled hours after 3:00 p.m. or before 6:00 a.m.

Preferred Qualifications

• Willing to work flexible hours (days, swing or overnight) and weekends as needed.
• Willing to assist as needed in other areas or departments within the hospital.
• Previous experience working in a teaching environment.
• Previous experience working in an emergency or urgent care veterinary practice.
• Adaptable to a fast-growing and developing workplace.
• Excellent understanding of medical terminology, medications, calculations, and common emergency procedures.
• Excellence and interest in developing interpersonal skills in relation to co-workers, clinicians, students, staff, and clients.

Working Conditions

• Hazards: Slips, trips, and falls; unpleasant odors, noises, and animal excretions; risk of bites, kicks, or scratches when animals are frightened or in pain.
• Hazards: Bloodborne pathogens, hazardous drugs, radiation, toxic waste, disinfectants, pesticides, latex.
• Animals: The hospital treats multiple species including small and large mammals, livestock, reptiles, avians, and other exotics.
