Job summary

UNC Rex Healthcare in Clayton, NC seeks a per diem Emergency Department assistant. You will assist with patient care and safety, respond to patient needs, and work across triage, minor treatment, and acute areas in a Chest Pain Accredited facility.

Responsibilities include vitals, intake/output, sterile procedures, minor splinting, IV management, and order transcription under supervision, with a 4:1 nurse-to-patient ratio and a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Nursing Assistant I or EMT certification with BLS is required.
  • Prefer three to six months relevant experience and/or training.
  • Ability to read safety rules and write routine reports; communicate clearly.

  • Takes and records temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rates every 2 hours or as directed.
  • Records intake and outputs as directed.
  • Performs urinary catheterization or in-and-out Foley procedure and documents accordingly.
  • Sets up area for sterile procedures and documents accordingly.
  • Performs minor orthopedic splinting under physician assistant direction.
  • Documents any skin breakdowns noted and notifies RN.
  • Removes IV catheter and documents accordingly.
  • Transcribes, documents, and transmits physician orders and pertinent information.
  • Able to work in triage, minor treatment and acute areas following departmental policy.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

  • Two-campus (Smithfield and Clayton) Emergency Departments with a combined total of 64 beds, offering diverse patient populations and acuity levels
  • 4:1 nurse-to-patient ratios, supporting safe, high-quality patient care
  • Strong team-based environment with a culture of collaboration and mutual support
  • Chest Pain Accredited facility, delivering evidence-based cardiac care, along with being an interventional STEMI center M-F 7a-5p
  • Primary Stroke Center, providing rapid, coordinated stroke response and treatment
  1. Takes and records temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration rates every 2 hours or as directed.

Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required; higher-level degree may satisfy this requirement.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

  • Listing as a Nursing Assistant I by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Professional Experience Requirements:

  • Prefer three to six months relevant experience and/or training

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
