Job Summary
The Emergency Room Tech provides technical support for physicians and nurses in the Emergency Center. The purpose of this position is to assist and support the nursing and medical staff of the Emergency Department, to perform patient care and environmental tasks, and to manage supplies and equipment to ensure a patient‑focused, cost‑effective operation of the department.
Description
The Emergency Room Tech will also be responsible for assisting the RN with performing education and observing chemical tests on patients or control specimens by clinical staff using the lab and correctly recording appropriate results. The Tech maintains all laboratory equipment correctly.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists RNs and physicians in providing technical care of the patients by documenting vital signs, performing phlebotomy and IV starts, performing EKGs, transporting patients, placing patients on cardiac and vital sign monitors, performing point‑of‑care testing, performing wound care, obtaining lab specimens, and documenting all care and procedures provided.
- Performs urine drug screens and/or breathalyzer tests once trained.
- Assists the physician with physical exams, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures.
- Applies a variety of orthopedic splints and fits patients for crutches.
- Ensures patient care areas, storage rooms, and equipment are clean and maintained.
- Cleans equipment and workspace, including patient rooms, restrooms, waiting room, and nurse’s station.
- Assists with unloading supplies into the Emergency Center.
- Performs point‑of‑care and quality control lab testing.
- Performs daily checks of ABC equipment in each room.
- Maintains temperature logs in the pharmacy and lab.
- Responsible for changing out sharp containers.
- Recognizes equipment malfunctions and refers them for repair.
- Performs patient care as directed by nursing or medical staff, documenting on the medical record.
- Ensures an adequate supply of equipment needed for patient care and is responsible for stocking items such as linens, wall mounts, thermometer and otoscope probes, patient care room drawers, vital sign machines, IV carts, orthopedic carts, urine cups and wipes, triage wound supplies, nourishment counter, patient and waiting room refrigerators.
- Performs quality control procedures and maintains records on these checks.
- Performs calibrations in compliance with manufacturer’s requirements.
- Ensures proficiency testing specimens are performed in compliance with policy.
- Monitors appropriate send‑out lab procedures.
- Maintains current appropriate and needed policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products, and instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies.
- Demonstrates the values of the team concept consistently.
- Interacts professionally with all department members, physicians, staff, administration, and the Lab Manager/Lab Director.
- Is able to perform moderate and waived testing per Clinical Laboratory standards and patient care unit policies and procedures.
- Is able to interpret the results of moderate and waived tests and take appropriate action on test results.
- Is responsible for documenting correct information for compliance purposes.
- Performs daily opening and closing duties as assigned.
- Along with all these duties, the Tech will greet all patients as they arrive and check them in a professional manner.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1–3 years’ experience in an Emergency Room setting or as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT‑P) required.
Language, Math, Reasoning and Ability
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information in one‑to‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rates, ratios, and percentages; and draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates and Licenses
- Current Emergency Medical Technician (or equivalent) certification preferred.
- BLS certification.
