Job summary

Mecklenburg County Government is seeking an Emergency Preparedness Coordinator to lead the public health preparedness program and coordinate cross‑functional readiness for emergencies. This exempt position strengthens community readiness while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.

The role provides strategic direction, oversight of policies, plans, and processes, and leadership across internal and external partners.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of four years of public health, healthcare and/orrelated experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in public health or a field related to the program area, such as Nutrition, Public Administration, Social Work, Emergency Preparedness, Health Administration, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure quality and accuracy in the implementation of public health preparedness programs and services
  • Monitors and maintains preparedness inventory
  • Assure that programs follow Departmental, County, State and Federal regulations, requirements, policies and procedures
  • Collaborates and coordinates with internal programs during events and incidents
  • Supervise, direct and evaluate the performance of staff within assigned program area
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with external agencies and organizations in program area
  • Provide leadership for assuring and coordinating the availability of program services in the community in response to public health preparedness
  • Understands and can execute multiple tasks during high stress and high demand situations
  • In the event of a public health emergency, employees may be trained for and assigned duties unrelated to their regular work; work outside normal business hours and workdays and/or in a different work location may be required. Emergency events include, but are not limited to, communicable disease outbreaks, severe weather situations (e.g. snow or ice storms, tornados, hurricanes), natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes), fire, or power outages, and acts of terrorism.

Salary Range: $63,080.00 - $82,792.50

This is an exempt (salary) position

Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity.Internal equity considerations include an assessment of the applicant’s salaryhistory and qualifications in comparison to the market rate and requirementsfor the job.

This role is on-site 5 days a week

This is a grant-funded position, funded by the Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) federalgrant. The grant performance period is July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2029 with potential to extend based on available funding.

Position Summary

Leads and coordinates the public health preparedness program, providing strategic direction to strengthen organizational and community readiness for public health emergencies and other hazards. Develops, implements, evaluates, and continuously improves policies, plans, and processes in accordance with local, state, and federal requirements and standards. Provides technical expertise and cross-functional leadership in preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery, while coordinating internal and external partnerships, planning, training, exercises, risk reduction, and corrective actions. Ensures program effectiveness, compliance, accountability, and alignment with organizational and community health and safety objectives.

Essential Functions

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

Minimum of four years of public health, healthcare and/orrelated experience

Education

Bachelor’s degree in public health or a field related to the program area, such as Nutrition, Public Administration, Social Work, Emergency Preparedness, Health Administration, or a related field.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
  • Requires County Driving Privileges
Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of NIMS, ICs, and/or emergency operations center functions
  • Experience in emergency plan writing, reviewing and development
  • Understanding of emergency exercise development using the HSEEP format
  • Preferred master’s degree in emergency management, public health, or public administration
