Job summary

The Department of Emergency Medicine at VCU Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center, seeks an enthusiastic EMS Fellow to join our academic team. This PRN Attending Physician role supports clinical care, teaching and research within our residency/fellowship programs.

Responsibilities include direct ED patient care, supervision of trainees, core curriculum lectures, ACLS/PALS/ATLS participation, and ongoing departmental research.

Mission or Goal of Unit

VCU Medical Center, which is alargely underserved, Level 1 Trauma Center and tertiary referralcenter, sees over 100,000 patients per year. The department isnationally recognized for innovative management of chest pain,stroke, major trauma, medical management of EMS and for providingmedical direction for aeromedical transport. In addition, theVirginia Poison Center is a division component of this department.The VCU Department of Emergency Medicine also provides coverage fora free-standing Emergency Department serving the rural patientcommunity of New Kent, VA which sees over 15,000 patients per yearand community hospitals in Tappahannock, VA and South Hill, VAwhich see 20,000 patients per year and 25,000 patients per yearrespectively. Virginia Commonwealth University Department ofEmergency Medicine houses an Emergency Medicine 3-year residencyprogram. We also partner with the Air Force and train theirresidents as well and are one of the only 12 programs to house acombined Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine residency programwith an additional 2 residents per year. Faculty may be recruitedat the rank of Assistant, Associate or full Professor commensuratewith experience.

Chief Purpose of this Position

We are seeking anenthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our dynamic academicEmergency Medicine team. The candidate will contribute to ourmission of providing exceptional patient care, innovative research,and high-quality education in Emergency Medicine. This positionsupports the department mission by providing clinical experience inEmergency Medicine by virtue of residency training and/or BoardCertification in Emergency Medicine.

Position Responsibilities

• Clinical - Provide direct patient care within theemergency department supervising all trainees, non-licensedproviders, and non-physician credentialed providers in the clinicalareas. Clinical obligations will be individualized depending onfaculty position assignment. Provide efficient, high qualitypatient care that reflects current professional practice norms andskills and is consistent with accepted utilization guidelines.Documents each patient encounter with a timely, comprehensive note.Demonstrate professional and courteous behavior towards patients,department staff and members of the hospital community. Fulfillbilling and coding responsibilities as defined in the scope ofpractice. Abide by department's operational manual, policies, andprocedures. Abide by hospital rules and regulations, medical staffbylaws, credentialing requirements, and MCVH's policies andprocedures. Demonstrate a willingness to fill uncovered shifts inaddition to clinical commitment.
• Teaching - Participate in providing core curriculumlectures to medical students, interns and resident level trainees.As appropriate, participates in ACLS, PALS and ATLS courses.Provides bedside clinical teaching to all trainees with theEmergency Department. Participates in nursing, housestaff, medicalstudent, advanced practice provider and paramedical educationalprograms.
• Research - Actively identify areas of interest andparticipate in Departmental research projects.
• Administrative - Attend department staff meetings unlesson clinical duty. Participate in and adhere to quality improvementand utilization review activities. Participates in relevantmarketing and public relations activities on behalf of the hospitaland Emergency Department. Participates in appropriate medical staffand hospital committees as assigned. Completes, in a timely manner,all reports and requests for information from the Department Chair,Vice-Chair and the School of Medicine. When required, participatesas a representative of the VCU Health System. Assignments couldspan a full spectrum of healthcare or be in a specific area ofinterest to the incumbent.

Required Qualifications

• Board Certified/Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine
• Active Virginia Medical license or ability to obtain
• Completion of an Emergency Medicine Residency within 3 years(if beyond 3 years of completing an accredited Emergency MedicineResidency program, must have completed 1500 hours of clinicalactivity in the past 3 years in an Emergency Department ofcomparable size, volume and patient acuity and can be waived at thediscretion of the Chair)
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment ofrespect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty,staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or acommitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
