Definition
  • Provides stand‑by emergency medical care and transportation at special event venues.
  • Responds to emergency scenes to provide emergency medical care and transportation.
  • Responds to hospitals, nursing homes and other locations to provide non‑emergency medical care and transportation.
  • Provides medical care and monitoring at the scene, en route to the hospital and during transportation to, from and/or between facilities.
  • Provides appropriate medical care and monitoring per local medical protocol and state law, adhering to company, local, regional, and state guidelines regarding patient care and delivers the patient to the appropriate medical facility.
  • Performs other duties related to emergency and non‑emergency medical care and transportation as directed.
Reports To
  • Field Captain/Supervisor or Operations Director as appropriate for all operational activities.
  • Medical Director – Medical Control on all patient care, protocol and clinical quality activities.
Specific Duties
  • Demonstrates complete knowledge, understanding and compliance of company policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that ambulance and all equipment are ready for use at the beginning of each shift and after every call. This includes cleaning and disinfecting of the interior and exterior of the vehicle, equipment, inspecting, restocking, completing daily checklists, and performing routine maintenance.
  • Ensures security of buildings, vehicles, equipment, medications and all other company property.
  • Performs daily inspections of their base and/or station for cleanliness, and performs housekeeping duties to keep living quarters clean, free from clutter and sanitary at all times.
  • Maintains appropriate communications with company dispatch, medical control and other agencies via radio, data link, pager or cell phone as required.
  • Is knowledgeable of local geography, including location of hospitals, public venues, local streets and highway systems.
  • Responds to emergencies and non‑emergencies using appropriate care and caution in accordance with state law, EMS regulations, company policy, and the principles of safe emergency vehicle operation.
  • Renders emergency and non‑emergency medical care and transportation in accordance with local medical protocol and state law, adhering to company, local, regional, and state guidelines regarding patient care consistent with good judgment and high quality medical care.
  • Appropriately and safely delivers the patient to the appropriate medical facility.
  • Acts at all times in the best interests of high quality patient care, the patient, and in a manner that reflects credibly on the company and the professional reputation of the EMT.
  • Acts at all times with personal safety in mind, as well as the safety of partner, patient, other EMS personnel, bystanders, and public safety personnel present.
  • Accomplices patients to their destination, continuing to provide appropriate care and patient advocacy until responsibility for the patient has been transferred to an appropriate medical professional and a report has been given.
  • Completes and signs all appropriate documentation for every response and transport.
  • Obtains complete medical histories and billing information for all patients treated and/or transported.
  • Maintains security and privacy of all company and patient information in accordance with HIPAA and all other local, state and federal regulations.
  • Adheres to Universal Precautions/Body Substance Isolation when dealing with patient contacts and practices infection control policies and procedures of the company.
  • When necessary and appropriate, acts as a team leader during emergency and non‑emergency situations, directing and supervising other members of the emergency medical care team.
  • Performs duties related to public relations and community education programs sponsored by the company.
  • Accepts responsibility for recertification as an EMT and for other required licenses and certifications as required by company, local, regional, and state policies, regulations or laws.
  • Reports to assigned shifts on time, properly groomed in uniform and on time unless proper notification has been made. Remains on‑duty and in proper uniform until properly relieved.
  • At all times sets an example of professionalism and leadership for others to follow. Places patient care excellence and safety above all else.
  • Performs other duties as directed by management.
