Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is hiring an Emergency Department Paramedic for an evening shift (10am-10:30pm) providing critical patient care under RN and physician supervision. The position emphasizes rapid assessment, monitoring, and treatment within scope of practice while supporting environment safety and communication.

Qualified candidates hold an EMT license (P preferred) with relevant experience, CPR/BLS, and may have ACLS/PALS.

Qualifications

  • Current EMT license with minimal restrictions or EMT-B with 1+ year experience.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • ACLS and PALS certifications are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Administers treatments and procedures within scope of practice as ordered by physician and directed by nursing staff.
  • Collects pertinent data and reports clinical findings to RN and physician.
  • Provides patient care, monitoring and safety, and effective communication.
  • Assists with OB/GYN care, phlebotomy, starting IVs and other duties as assigned.

Job description

The salary range for this position is $20.73 - $29.02 (Hourly Rate).

Placement within the salary range is dependent on several factors such as relevant work experience and internal equity. For positions represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range is guided by the rules outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.

Description

Evenings shift 10am-1030pm.

The Emergency Department Technician position reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Paramedic provides patient care within a defined scope of practice that includes patient care, monitoring and observation, specified treatments and procedures; provision of environmental and personal safety and effective communication.

Responsibilities:
  • The Paramedic functions under the direction of the Emergency Nurse (RN) and Physician. The Paramedic will also be responsible to collect pertinent data within their certification scope of responsibilities and report these clinical findings to the RN and Physicians. Assists patients with basic care needs and any other duties related to the well-being of the patient following established nursing policies and procedures. Prioritizes patient care activities based on patient needs and unit activity under the direction of the Clinical Shift Coordinator and/or Relief Charge Nurse. Administers treatments and various procedures (within their scope of practice) to patients as ordered by the physician and directed by the Professional Nursing Staff including but not limited to the following: Vital signs; Orthostatic blood pressures; Attaches cardiac monitor; Obtains 12 lead ECG; Identifies abnormal cardiac rhythms and life threatening arrhythmias, pulse oximetry, capnography; Oxygen administration including nasal cannula, oxy mask, non rebreather mask; Obtains finger stick blood sugar and specimen collections such as urine or stool or wound; Wound care; Sterile technique glove application and tray set up; Aseptic technique and wound cleansing; Wound dressings steri strips; tube gauze; dry gauze; Telfa/adaptic; antibiotic ointment application; cold and sterile saline burn dressings; Assists with OB/GYN care; Assists physician with exam; Obtain visual acuity; Eye care including eye irrigation and eye patch application; Orthopedic care and applications including splints wraps immobilizers crutches; Assist in code situations; Phlebotomy; Start and discontinue IVs; Managing intravenous maintenance fluids; Identifies changes in patient condition and notifies RN/physician. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Current EMT P license without restrictions or EMT B within at least one (1) year relative experience in a similar capacity; including, but not limited to: Military experience, private ambulance company, fire department or healthcare setting
  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • CERT Basic Life Support
Preferred:
  • ACLS and PALS certification
