Job summary

McLaren Health Care's Emergency Services department seeks a patient care assistant to support nursing and medical staff in the ED. Under direct supervision you perform essential patient care and clerical tasks, helping to create a safe, efficient environment.

Responsibilities include assisting with procedures, restocking supplies, transporting specimens, admitting and discharging patients, starting IVs, and documenting observations. Must have EMT/MA/CNA/BLS credentials and a high school diploma.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Six months patient care experience in a health care delivery setting OR completion of the US Armed Services medic program.
  • Certification as an emergency medical technician (EMT), paramedic, medical assistant (MA), or certified nursing assistant (CNA).
  • BLS certification.

  • Provides direct and indirect patient care, assisting nursing and physician staff with patient care procedures.
  • Inventories and restocks emergency department equipment.
  • Collects and transports specimens such as urine, blood, and cultures.
  • Assists with the admission and discharge of patients, initiates and discontinues intravenous lines, cleans and prepares examination room between patients.
  • Places patients on monitors, provides wound care, assists with orthopedic procedures and other emergency room procedures as requested.
  • Reports and records observations in the patient medical record.
  • Reports patient care needs and changes in condition to the nursing staff.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned .

Education

High school diploma or equivalent
EMT/Paramedic/MA/CNA certification and BLS
ACLS certification (preferred)

  • Ability to understand, react effectively and treat (if appropriate) the unique needs of various patient age groups served:infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and policy and procedures manuals.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with people at various levels in a courteous, tactful and poised manner.
