Job summary

McLaren Health Care in Lansing, MI is seeking a Patient Care Assistant to support nursing staff and assist in delivering patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse.

You will perform routine patient care, collect data, assist with procedures, monitor patients, and help with emergencies. Schedule is full-time with 7p-7a shifts; weekends required.

Qualifications

• Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
• Specialized education: acute care nursing assistant course preferred or EMT/medical assistant training or clinical rotation in an accredited nursing program is acceptable.
• Recent patient care experience in acute care or related clinical rotation.
• BLS certification as Healthcare Provider or MTN equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Record and report vital signs and changes in patient data to RN.
• Assist in procedures and set up equipment for care.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of a registered nurse, responsible for providing support to nursing staff and assisting in the delivery of patient care following hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and standards of care.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Provides routine patient care services such as call light response; ambulating, transferring, and positioning; personal hygiene assistance.
• Collects, records, and reports various patient data. Obtains vital signs, blood glucose levels, bedside pregnancy testing, and reports changes in patient data to registered nurse.
• Performs foley catheterization for both male and female patients, uses bladder scanner for patients to estimate bladder contents. Administers enemas as directed. Collects and transports specimen. Documents.
• Performs specific orthopedic procedures such as placement and fitting of splints, immobilizers, supports, slings, wraps and crutches, and provides instruction. Obtains, and documents correctly, paperwork in appropriate paperwork.
• Performs electrocardiogram, gives copy to Emergency physician and transmits for interpretation. Places patient on cardiac monitor as needed.
• Performs general unit support activities such as postmortem care, cleaning of rooms and areas, running errands, making deliveries, and restocking.
• Performs decontamination procedures and other decontamination activities.
• Sets up of suture trays, instruments and other equipment.
• Participates in emergencies; CPR, spiking IVs, slaving monitors. Setting up for pacing/defibrillation and assisting with intubation, suction and airway management.
• Performs other related responsibilities as necessary.

Required

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Specialized education requirements include:
• acute care nursing assistant course preferred for acute care positions or
• long term care nursing assistant course or
• completion of an emergency medical technician program or
• completion of medical assistant program or
• completion of a clinical rotation while participating in an accredited nursing program or
• completion of medical training in a branch or the armed services
• Recent patient care experience in acute care setting as nursing assistant, EMT, completion of a clinical rotation in an accredited nursing program, or completion of the US Armed Services medic program.
• BLS certification as Healthcare Provider or equivalent through the Military Training Network (MTN).

Preferred

• Emergency Department experience.
