Job summary

Frederick Health Hospital Emergency Department seeks a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) under RN supervision to support patient care and perform skills per established policies. The role participates in continuous quality improvement activities and aligns with FH mission, vision, and compliance program.

Our fast-paced 60-bed adult ED offers a certified Stroke Center and Cardiac Center with rapid evaluation and coordinated care.

Responsibilities

• Obtains and records patient vital signs and weight.
• Assists patients with disrobing while protecting privacy and belongings.
• Initiates cardiac monitoring and performs 12 lead EKGs as directed.
• Performs venipuncture and establishes IVs and collects blood specimens.
• Assists with orthopedic splinting and fitting devices.
• Performs point-of-care testing as directed.
• Conducts blood glucose monitoring as directed.
• Assists in morgue care and patient transfers.
• Prepares patient areas for discharge or transfer.
• Maintains equipment checklists and reports variances in performance.
• Supports code blue and Go Teams and adheres to hospital guidelines.

Unit Description

The Frederick Health Hospital Emergency Department is a fast-paced 60 bed adult unit with 9 crisis beds where more than 70,000 patients seek care each year, making it one of the busiest emergency departments in the state. We care for adult patients with a wide range of medical conditions. Our certified Stroke Center includes a dedicated team who provide rapid diagnosis and innovative stroke care. We also house a certified Cardiac Center providing rapid chest pain evaluation and coordinated care with our inpatient Cath Lab. We are a proud winner of the Maryland Stars for Life Award from the Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Service System (MIEMSS) in 2025, designated as a Magnet recognized hospital and named A Great Place to Work in Healthcare by Becker’s.

Example Of Essential Functions

• Obtains and records patient’s vital signs and weight.
• Assists patients to disrobe providing protection of privacy and care of personal possessions.
• Initiates cardiac monitoring and performs 12 Lead EKG’s as directed.
• Performs venipuncture, inserts and/or discontinues intravenous catheters, obtains venous blood specimens
• Performs orthopedic splinting including OCL cast application, crutch fitting and teaching, soft cast application, and fitting/application of other various orthopedic support devices.
• Performs point of care testing as directed.
• Performs blood glucose monitoring as directed.
• Assists in morgue care.
• Assists in transferring a patient to diagnostic areas using a stretcher and/or wheelchair.
• Assists in preparing a patient for discharge or transfer.
• Prepares the patient area for incoming patients.
• Performs equipment checklist as assigned.
• Reports variances of equipment performance to the Charge Nurse.
• Uses equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and department standards.
• Functions as a member of the Code Blue and Go Teams.
• Performs close observation according to the hospital standards and guidelines.
• Contributes ideas on recommendations of solutions to increase efficiency and promote cost containment and quality of care.
• Demonstrates proper phone etiquette.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Ability to read, write and comprehend medical terminology

Minimum Education, Training, And Experience Required

• Current certification in BLS
• CNA Certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing as required by Health Occupations Article Title 8-6A-01
• Completion of skill competency checklists.
• Completion of departmental competencies within one year of hire.

Reports to Department Director/Manager and RN Staff in the Emergency Department
