Job summary

Baptist Health is seeking an Emergency Department Nurse Mentor to develop and implement a nursing mentorship model at the Baptist Medical Center South campus. The role includes rounds to guide staff, teaching, and collaboration with educators and Nursing Leadership to improve outcomes.

The nurse mentor will participate in orientation, provide lectures, and assist with patient care as needed to support a high-performing, safe and compassionate ED team.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Nursing required; BSN preferred; MSN highly preferred.
  • Active RN licensure and BLS required; ACLS/PALS may be required per unit.
  • Minimum 5 years of acute care nursing, medical-surgical, ICU, or specialty experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a mentorship model for nursing staff.
  • Serve as role model, leader, educator, and clinician; conduct rounds to guide staff.
  • Participate in new staff orientation and bedside training.
  • Deliver nursing education lectures and case studies.
  • Collaborate with Nursing Leadership and Educators to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Provide patient care as needed to support the team and unit operations.
  • Perform additional duties within the role's scope.

Summary

The RN - Mentor shall be tasked to develop and implement a model for mentorship for nursing staff. The Mentor will serve as a role model, leader, consultant, collaborator, educator, and clinician. The Mentor shall collaborate with unit Educators, Preceptors, and Nursing Leadership to assess the needs of clinical nurses. This individual shall participate in the delivery of new clinical staff orientation. As a member of the nursing team, the Mentor will establish a setting that supports professional nursing practice and empowers nurses to provide safe, effective, compassionate, and efficient nursing care in collaboration with all health care disciplines. This individual will make rounds to meet with clinical nurses to provide guidance and oversee less experienced nurses and to help facilitate their career development while providing training to aspiring nurses, nursing students, or licensed staff to help ensure provision of safe care and ease transition from advanced beginner to competent clinical nurse. The Mentor shall prepare and deliver nursing related education lectures and case studies to assigned nurses. Additionally, the Mentor will provide patient care in areas where needed to assist the unit and nursing team. The Mentor will also collaborate with Directors and Management to determine other necessary functions which will optimize patient outcomes and mentorship for the nursing team. This position may have additional duties assigned that are within scope of the role.

Education / Experience

Degree in Nursing required, BSN preferred, MSN highly preferred. Minimum 5 years of medical surgical, intensive care, or specialty nursing clinical and/or teaching experience in acute care.

License / Certification

Active RN licensure, BLS required, Additional certifications (ACLS, PALS, NRP, other specialty certifications) may be required depending upon unit assigned

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

Position requires sitting for 20% of the workday and mobility 80% of the workday. There is occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching. There is frequent reaching, use of hands and repetitive action. Requires occasional lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds, pushing/pulling up to 150 pounds. There is a continuous need for speaking with clear diction and hearing sensitivity in conversation either by phone or in person. Continuous visual acuity at close and distant range. Inside protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. Minimal noise levels. Much exposure to computer work. Occasional exposure to risk of electrical shock. Some exposure to infectious disease while performing job-related tasks. Some exposure to hazardous chemicals. Occasional exposure to radiation.
