Job summary

Qualifications

  • Current Illinois RN license.
  • BSN is required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 3–5 years of progressive nursing leadership, ED preferred.
  • Active BLS certification; ACLS and PALS required.
  • TNCC preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day‑to‑day leadership and operational oversight of the Emergency Department.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate goals, policies and performance standards.
  • Ensure safe, efficient, high‑quality, patient‑centered ED care.
  • Plan staffing based on volume, acuity, and needs; recruit and onboard staff.
  • Mentor staff and promote professional development; foster teamwork and retention.
  • Monitor patient flow, wait times, throughput, and ED metrics; drive improvements.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and readiness for surveys (Joint Commission, etc.).
  • Assist with budgeting, expense management, and resource utilization.
  • Collaborate with ED physicians and nursing leadership to optimize outcomes.

Position Summary

The Emergency Department Director provides overall leadership, direction, and operational oversight for the Emergency Department. This position is responsible for ensuring high-quality patient care, effective staffing, regulatory compliance, fiscal responsibility, and the development of a strong, collaborative clinical team.

The Director works closely with physicians, nursing leadership, hospital administration, and other departments to ensure efficient patient flow and excellent clinical outcomes.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and day-to-day operational oversight of the Emergency Department.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate departmental goals, policies, procedures, and performance standards.
  • Ensure the delivery of safe, efficient, high-quality, and patient-centered emergency care.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate staffing plans based on patient volume, acuity, and operational needs.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, onboard, coach, and evaluate department staff.
  • Provide ongoing leadership, mentoring, education, and professional development opportunities for employees.
  • Promote employee engagement, accountability, teamwork, and retention.
  • Monitor patient flow, wait times, length of stay, throughput, and other key Emergency Department metrics.
  • Identify operational challenges and implement strategies to improve efficiency and patient outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Emergency Department physicians and other medical staff to promote effective patient care.
  • Monitor compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Maintain readiness for regulatory and accreditation surveys, including Joint Commission and other applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Monitor quality indicators and participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  • Investigate patient complaints, safety events, and other concerns and implement appropriate corrective actions.
  • Assist with departmental budgeting, expense management, and resource utilization.
  • Monitor supplies, equipment, and inventory to ensure appropriate resources are available.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with hospital departments and support services.
  • Participate in hospital committees, leadership meetings, and organizational initiatives as assigned.
  • Support emergency preparedness and disaster response activities.
  • Promote evidence-based nursing practices and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain a professional and respectful work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive nursing leadership experience, preferably in an Emergency Department setting.
  • Previous Emergency Department nursing experience required.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • ACLS certification required.
  • PALS certification required.
  • TNCC certification preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of emergency nursing, patient flow, staffing, quality improvement, and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience with employee coaching, performance management, and staff development.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
